Development

The film was announced in December 2012.[5] The film is written by Habib Faisal (of Ishaqzaade fame) and directed by Nupur Asthana (of Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge fame). The film was described as a "slice of life" film, set during the time of recession. Ayushmann Khurrana's and Sonam Kapoor's characters are described as being "passionately in love" and believe that their love can help them survive, however Kapoor's father, played by Rishi Kapoor, strongly believes against this.[6]

Casting

Ayushmann Khurrana, Sonam Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor were cast in December 2012. Ayushmann and Sonam are paired opposite each other for the first time, with Rishi Kapoor cast in the role of Sonam Kapoor's father.[5]

Filming

Shooting for the film began in February 2013[7] in Delhi and Gurgaon.[8][9] Part of the filming planned in Dubai and cast was shooting scenes for the recession comedy Bewakoofiyaan.[10][11]

Soundtrack

Untitled

The soundtrack for the film is composed by Raghu Dixit, while the lyrics are penned by Anvita Dutt, except where noted. Dixit was also the music composer for Asthana's last film, Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge.[12] The song O Heeriye is a bonus track in the film's soundtrack.

Critical reception

On release, the film received mixed responses from critics.[13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21]

Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama praised the film, stating in his review the film to be a "pleasant surprise" with "super performances of [sic] Rishi, Ayushmann and Sonam, watertight writing, skilled direction and dollops of humor." Ultimately, he gave the film 4.5 out of 5 stars.[13] Saibal Chatterjee in his review for NDTV described the film to score "with its disarming simplicity" thereby "never less than watchable".[14] Tushar Joshi reviewing for Daily News and Analysis stated it to miss out on the "opportunity to be smarter and funnier" by playing "too safe to rise above the ordinary".[15] Madhureeta Mukherjee in her review for The Times of India stated the film to have its share of beauty but falters with a helpless script.[16]

According to Sanjuta Sharma of Mint and The Wall Street Journal—the film, "flat, monotonous" and "defying all manner of reason" is no better than "a soap opera" throughout the entire course of the film. She stated Khurrana's act to be a "sum of flat expressions and uninspired lines"; that of Rishir Kapoor's to have "hammy moments" and the lack of character evolution or transformation.[17] In three reviews from India Today, Suhani Singh stated it to offer a "a jaded romance and few laughs";[18] Faheem Ruhani asked the readers not to spend their "money on this one";[19] and Rohit Khilnani stated to "skip it".[20] In a review for Hindustan Times by Anupama Chopra stated—"This is one of those films that doesn't either offend or engage. It just goes on, in a bland, listless manner, until we hit happily ever after." She praised Khuranna's performance, saying, "The strongest performance here is Ayushmann’s. His anger and frustration at losing the good life are palpable." Concerning Sonam Kapoor's performance, she said, "Sonam looks lovely. She attempts to imbue Mayera with some texture but it’s an uphill climb."[22] Shubhra Gupta in her review for The Indian Express stated "Neither Kapoor nor Khurrana manage to lift off the screen: they are as flat as the film".[21]
