User:Tregowith added the category Copyright infringement with the comment "technically, it is" on Jan. 23, 2006. I just removed it, because, no, actually, technically it is undecided whether fanfic is copyright infringement or not. As a genre, it is arguably fair use or even de minimis in some instances. But each individual work of fanfic would be assessed, individually, based on the underlying work, and the work of fanfic. So AT BEST this article should be listed under "copyright law" category, not infringement. I would say that even that is actually just bad categorization, though. Not all fanfic relates to fictional characters, or fictional characters with IP. See fanfic re: New Kids on the Block, Pride & Prejudice for example. If you want to write an article on fanfic issues and copyright, I'll help out, but this cat should only apply to an article specifically about copyright & fanfic, not the entire generic category of fanfic. I'm posting this on Tregowith's user page & the Cat talk: Fan fiction page since I'm reversing a Jan. 2006 change in Nov. 2006. --LQ 17:10, 12 November 2006 (UTC) -->[reply]

PS -- I just added the copyright law cat to an article in fanfic about legal issues, which seemed appropriate. --LQ 17:16, 12 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
