New category
[edit]The list of notable IDM artists in the intelligent dance music article is undergoing daily revisions / edit wars, with no end in sight, by people who want their favorite artists (or themselves) to be listed and linked from the article. Part of the problem is that there are no other places where IDM artists are listed in Wikipedia. I created this category in hopes of alleviating the edit wars. However, a category is only good for artists who are notable enough to have articles in Wikipedia, so if someone wants to create List of IDM musicians to fill in the gaps, then go for it. — mjb 00:09, 7 February 2006 (UTC)
Use of initials IDM in category name
[edit]I am under the impression that category names are not supposed to contain initialisms, but in this case, the alternative is rather unpleasant: Intelligent dance music musicians sounds redundant, and Intelligent dance musicians would leave people scratching their heads. I feel IDM musicians is the best name becasue IDM is a distinct genre and is almost always referenced by its initials. A lot of people don't even know what the initials stand for, they just know it means 'that bleepy-glitchy-clicky stuff', or whatever flavors of IDM they're into. — mjb 00:09, 7 February 2006 (UTC)
List of notable artists from IDM article
[edit]On 7 Feb 2006, without explanation, an anonymous editor (User:81.104.136.184) moved this list and paragraph of prose from the Notable IDM artists section of the Intelligent Dance Music article.

- Many mainstream rock artists have experimented with IDM influences. Björk worked with Mark Bell of LFO and Matmos on Homogenic and Vespertine, respectively. Radiohead began toying with electronics on OK Computer and has continued to draw from the genre, especially on the album Kid A.
What to do with the list
[edit]I wasn't responsible for moving the list here, but now that it's here, what do you propose we do with it? I do think there is value in mentioning the big names in the IDM article, but not if it's going to result in more edit wars.
In the disc jockey article we use a terse summary of why each DJ is notable. This works fairly well there, although I can see how it might backfire in an article about a musical genre that is by definition experimental: all of the artists are 'pioneers' in some way. — mjb 10:19, 8 February 2006 (UTC)
Comment to a possible solution
[edit]There was an idea proposed earlier for a "List of IDM Musicians", which I think is good as long as there are some constraints set around artist additions. (i.e. just because they are your best friend's band, doesn't mean they neccessarily belong on the list) I do notices some bands not on the current listing that are pretty well known in the IDM scene, so I would definitely like to see a good comprehensive list. I would be happy to start the "List of IDM Musicians", based on what we have here and any additions that are appropriate. Antje23 21:06, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
==If a new list is created--
I definitely think the artists in the above post by Kid A should be added. Having been a fan of electronic music, and IDM, for almost 10 years now, I also believe Datach'i and Unit should definitely be added. Both have made significant contributions to the genre. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Omotorwayo (talk • contribs) 11:21, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

goldfrapp?
[edit]Is it really necessary to have subcategories if the only one is Goldfrapp? Goldfrapp isn't even IDM in the first place. M Carriere (talk) 08:32, 21 December 2008 (UTC)
