Split category?[edit]

This category is a rather confusing mix of articles on Lancaster the place and the City of Lancaster district. There are more than enough articles about the place to justify its own category. Any objection to separating the 2 topics by setting up a new Category:Lancaster District (rather than Category:City of Lancaster, which is ambiguous)? I agree that the current name isn't the best, but it should really be consistent with the corresponding article, i.e. Category:City of Lancaster. There are a number of other "City of..." categories already. Category:City of Canterbury, Category:City of Chelmsford, Category:City of Preston, Lancashire, Category:City of St Albans, Category:City of Sunderland, Category:City of Winchester. Ideally the subcategories should be renamed too, e.g. "Buildings and structures in the City of Lancaster‎". -- Dr Greg talk 23:03, 2 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Although it is generally the case that categories follow the name of the article on the same topic, it does not necessarily apply if the name is ambiguous, even if the topic is the primary topic. For example, article Dover but Category:Dover, Kent (discussed here), and article Plymouth but Category:Plymouth, Devon. Here we have the reverse situation - and I suspect that the present category title would not survive WP:CFD. (Though arguably Lancaster, England would be a better title for the article, following the current WP:UKPLACE.)

Apart from the complication of there being other cities of Lancaster, the category title "City of.." seems to me to be ambiguous where the word "city" is commonly used to refer to the settlement (e.g. in several places in the article on Lancaster). Even the Lancaster City Council's own website uses "Lancaster district" to refer to the district as opposed to the settlement (e.g. here).--Mhockey (talk) 21:08, 4 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
