Production

In October 2011, Lionsgate Entertainment acquired worldwide distribution rights to a film adaptation of the Patrick Ness' Chaos Walking novels trilogy, to be produced by Doug Davison's production company Quadrant Pictures.[11] Jamie Linden was set to write the film.[12] Deadline reports back in 2013 that Robert Zemeckis was hired as the director, but due to scheduling conflicts, he decides to produce instead along with his partners through his banner ImageMovers Productions. On June 10, 2016, Doug Liman was in talks to direct the film.[13] On August 4, 2016, it was reported that Daisy Ridley joined the cast.[3] She was a fan of the books, and wanted to star in the film after finishing Star Wars: The Force Awakens. On November 28, 2016, Tom Holland joined the cast after starring in Spider-Man: Homecoming.[2] On July 20, 2017, it was announced that Mads Mikkelsen joined the cast for the film as the villainous mayor.[4] In August 2017, Demian Bichir, Kurt Sutter, Nick Jonas and David Oyelowo joined the cast.[5][6][7][8] In September 2017, Cynthia Erivo joined the cast.[9] In the next month, Oscar Jaenada was added to the cast.[14]

Principal photography on the film began in Montreal, Quebec on August 7, 2017.[15][16] The film will also be shot in Scotland, and Iceland.[17] Principal production is scheduled to wrap on November 8, 2017.[16] On October 13, 2017, Tom Holland broke his nose while filming on set.[18]
