Chronology
PredecessorChevrolet Corvette (C6)

The Chevrolet Corvette (C7) is a sports car being produced by the Chevrolet division of General Motors introduced for the 2014 model year. It is the seventh generation Corvette and the first to bear the Corvette Stingray name since the 1976 third generation model. It is expected to start delivery in the 3rd quarter of 2013. This new version will be available with right-hand drive in the UK market for the first time since Corvette was introduced in 1953.[3]

Development and introduction

According to Motor Trend, GM executives have been planning the next-generation (C7) Corvette since 2007, and officially revealed it in Detroit at 7pm EST on January 13, 2013. The car was originally planned for the 2011 model year, but was delayed, and currently expected to arrive in fall 2013 in the 2014 model year.[4] Mid-engine and rear-engine layouts had been considered, but the front-engine, rear-wheel drive (RWD) platform was chosen to keep costs lower.[5] The C7's all-new LT1 6.2L Small Block V-8 engine is expected to increase the overall speed, while also increasing the overall fuel economy from the previous 2013's 26 MPG highway rating. This engine develops 455 horsepower (339 kW) and 460 lb.-ft. of torque (624 Nm), which gives it a 0-60 time of 3.8 seconds.

Car and Driver said in April 2011, "We anticipate change in the C7 will be apparent at a glance, even to casual observers ... it seems certain the coupe will feature a split rear window – a la the Sting Ray coupe of 1963. In this case it will be an optional feature."[6] An interior makeover is also expected with upgraded materials with seats comparing favorably with the buckets found in Porsches and BMWs. The front-engine Y platform will be essentially unchanged from the C6 with an improvement expected in steering linearity and feel. The Z06 and ZR1 will continue, while the Grand Sport may become the base model. The C7 should hit dealerships in fall of 2013.[6]

On October 18, 2012, GM made an official news announcement and confirmed that the seventh-generation Chevrolet Corvette will debut on Sunday evening, January 13, 2013, in Detroit. Chevrolet also showed the new Crossed Flags logo for the new 2014 Corvette.

Equipment

The new Corvette from day one was a pioneer in the use of industry first advanced materials and the features of the new generation include a carbon fiber hood and removable roof panel. Its fenders, doors and rear quarter panels remain composite. The under-body panels are made of "carbon-nano" composite and it makes use of a new hydroformed aluminum frame which locates the four wheels an inch farther apart, front to rear and side to side. The rear tail lights use indirect LED technology. Despite the increased use of aluminum and other light weight materials, the overall weight of the car remains the same as that of the previous generation's.[22] The new corvette will use a new seven speed manual transmission made by Tremec and active rev matching. The Corvette will use a sophisticated driver mode selector with 5 settings Weather, Eco, Tour, Sport and Track mode. The C7 will use a C6.R race car inspired functional hood and side vents and inlets for cooling of the different components and for down force. The interior features one of the most advanced driver displays in the industry that changes depending on what mode a person will be in. Two seats will be available for the corvette: a sporty touring seat for every day use, and a competition sport seat for track driving with pass throughs for a racing harness. The new C7 interior is world class with authentic materials such as aluminum and carbon fiber.

The new Corvette LT1 engine, the first of the Gen 5 family of Small Block engines, retains the pushrods acting on overhead valves design, and brings several technologies new to the engine line, such as direct injection, Active Fuel Management (cylinder deactivation) and continuously variable valve timing that have been widely available in the market in the vehicles of numerous, and much lower-priced, competitors.[23] Fuel injectors are located under the intake manifold. It remains rear-wheel drive with the transaxle located in the rear. Transmission choices include a 7-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters.

The advanced cluster display in the 2014 Corvette Stingray can provide up to 69 unique sources of information, ranging from an interactive performance timer to a tire tread temperature display.[24]

Motorsports

Equipment

Performance Data Recorder includes:[50]

  • A 720p high-definition camera mounted within the windshield header trim, which records the driver's point-of-view through the windshield, with audio recorded via a dedicated microphone in the cabin.
  • A self-contained telemetry recorder. The system uses a dedicated GPS receiver that operates at 5 Hz, five times faster than the in-dash navigation system, for more precise positioning and corner traces. The recorder is also hard-wired into the Stingray's Controller Area Network (CAN) to access vehicle information, ranging from engine speed and transmission-gear selection to braking force and steering-wheel angle.
  • A dedicated SD-card slot in the glove box for recording and transferring video and vehicle data.

The PDR system can record video with three data overlay options, each rendered in real time:

  • Track Mode – shows the maximum level of data on the screen, including speed, rpm, g-force, a location-based map, lap time, and more.
  • Sport Mode – shows fewer details on the overlay, but includes key data including speed and g-force
  • Touring Mode – no data overlay; it simply records and displays video and audio of the drive
  • Performance Mode – records performance metrics, such as 0 to 60 mph acceleraiton, 1/4-mile speed and elapsed time, and 0-100-0 mph runs. The video can be viewed on the Corvette Stingray's eight-inch color touchscreen (when the car is parked), or downloaded to a computer for further editing, and sharing video via social media sites.

The PDR vehicle data can be opened in the included "Cosworth Toolbox" software, which combines Cosworth's professional-level motorsport data analysis with an easy-to-use graphic interface. The Cosworth Toolbox application overlays recorded laps on a Bing-enabled satellite map of the track, and features an easy-to-use interface to compare selected laps in detail, for any requested point on the drive. Comparisons include corner traces, vehicle speed, and cornering force to help drivers improve their driving consistency, and ultimately lap times.

Production

The 8L90 eight-speed automatic transmission used in Corvette Z06 was built at GM's Toledo, Ohio, transmission facility.

2015 Corvette Z06 and C7.R's aluminum frames were produced at the Bowling Green, Kentucky assembly plant.

The LT4 engine was built in Tonawanda plant and Bowling Green plant at the new Performance Build Center.
