The Chile national football team played a total number of nineteen international matches (including four unofficial games) in the 2001 season under the guidance of Uruguayan manager Nelson Acosta, who stepped down after the Sahara Millennium Cup in India. He was replaced by Pedro García Barros. The last three matches were coached by Jorge Garcés. Chile ended up in last place in the qualification for the 2002 FIFA World Cup, with only three wins in eighteen matches.
