Chowk Azam is a city of Layyah District just 25 km from Layyah. It is located on the Mianwali and Multan road (MM road).[2] It has a population of more than 150,000. The city has many educational and vocational institutes like Government Muslim High School, Government College for boys and The Guardian College.

History

According to some history books the history of Chowk Azam lies back in 14th century's incidence when a foe outburtsted between the ruling king of Afghanistan and his brother on crown and throne; one of them left the country in fear of being killed by his brother thus he fled to then India(sub-continent) in hope for political asylum from Indian king. They travelled accompanied by their household, courtesans, slaves and cattles in meanwhile the news of fleeing became known to the Afghani king so he prepared his legions and chased the political asylum seekers. They opponed at the place at Sindharr clan's thatch house and well this is that very place where HBL nowadays is situated. They englufed the departed caravan and started slaughtering the men, women, children even the cattles. It's said that they kept on chopping the people and dumping it in the well and subsequently the well filled with blood and gushed out of well so that is why it was formerly called "Khoni Chowk". Later on, on arrival of Colonel Muhammad Azam and purchased the land and got a mosque constructed which is now a central mosque of the city so then it was named after colonel Azam and began to be called Chowk Azam.

This city is inhabitants of Punjabi, Saraiki, Pushtoon and Rohitky communities but majority is of Punjabis. Punjabi usually came to this region pre and post partition era. Agriculture belonging peasants migrated from upper and central Punjab mainly from Sialkot, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Lahore, Faisalabad and Narowal they settled here and expanded their businesses here.

Transportational Hub

Chowk Azam is recognized as of its popularity of ease of public transport means. Because of it location and being lied on four major roads which lead to the four provinces of the country and major cities of Pakistan. Faisalabad road leads to Jhang, Faisalabad, Toba Tek Singh, Gojra, Lahore, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Gujrat and Narowal. On this road renowned transporters are Baloch Transport Company, Babu Nazir, Safdar Nazir, Shuja Express.

Chowk Azam has various business extensions and life commodities. Enterprises to large plazas exist in Chowk Azam.
