Claudine Margaret Castelo Barretto-Santiago or popularly known as Claudine Barretto was born on the 20th of July 1979 is an award winning, product endorser and multi nominated actress in the Philippines. She is dubbed as the "Optimum Teleserye Queen". She is now proudly a Kapuso Star.
TV Career
In 1992, Barretto was discovered by the late talent manager Douglas Quijano when her older sister Gretchen Barretto brought her to the debut party of Ruffa Gutierrez at the Coconut Palace. That same year, she landed her first major break on television when she was cast as one of the mainstays of ABS-CBN's youth-oriented musical variety show, Ang TV. In quick succession, she then played Dolphy's daughter named Bing in the sitcom Home Along Da Riles topbilled by Dolphy, and Agot Isidro's sister named Tony in Oki Doki Doc topbilled by Aga Muhlach.
Barretto's lead television roles started with 1997's Mula Sa Puso where she played the rich heiress, Via, opposite Rico Yan and Diether Ocampo. Then came 1999's Saan Ka Man Naroroon where her performance as triplets Rosario, Rosenda and Rosemarie earned her a nomination for Best Actress in the Asian TV Awards.[1] Next in line was 2001's Sa Dulo Ng Walang Hanggan where she played the role of Angelina in the past and Angeline in the present.
After three consecutive soap operas, Barretto became part of the ensemble cast of 2003's two-season weekly series Buttercup with Diether Ocampo and Piolo Pascual to name a few. In 2004, she returned to primetime via the first modern fantaserye as the mermaid Marina. 2005's Ikaw ang Lahat sa Akin directed by F.M. Reyes with John Lloyd Cruz, Bea Alonzo, Shaina Magdayao, Angelika de la Cruz and Diether Ocampo marked the first time that she was not directed by Wenn Deramas.
After getting married, Barretto was reunited with Deramas in 2007's Walang Kapalit with Jodi Sta. Maria, TJ Trinidad and Piolo Pascual where some scenes were filmed in Australia. After giving birth, she played the role originated by Susan Roces in the 20-episode sineserye Maligno in 2008. This was followed by Iisa Pa Lamang with Angelica Panganiban, Diether Ocampo and Gabby Concepcion under Ruel Bayani's direction. Her last television appearance was a special guesting in 2009's May Bukas Pa whose lead child actor shares the same name with her son Santino. Also, in 2010, in GMA 7, she will be in a big teleserye entitled "Bituin" with Angelika dela Cruz, Mark Anthony Fernandez, Raymart Santiago and many more. This teleserye will be directed by Andoy Ranay.
From TV to The Big Screen
Early in her acting career, Barretto already co-starred with veteran actors Dolphy and Aga Muhlach, and premiere actresses such as the Star for All Seasons Vilma Santos, Diamond Star Maricel Soriano, Grand Slam Actress Lorna Tolentino, and Megastar Sharon Cuneta.
The young Barretto was Seiko's bet for stardom. Her first three films under Seiko were Kumusta Ka, Aking Mahal?, Taong Gubat and Pulis Patola. She was paired with newcomer Emil Benedicto. She also did Kung Sakali Man. Although an exclusive Seiko contract star before, she was still allowed to accept two assignments with Star Cinema, Home Along Da Riles (The Movie) and May Minamahal.
In 1994's Lagalag: The Eddie Fernandez Story, she was cast as Pops Fernandez with the late Rudy Fernandez playing her father.
In 1996, she was able to work with Lorna Tolentino in May Nagmamahal Sa'yo and Sharon Cuneta in Madrasta.
In 1998, she landed her first major lead role in Dahil Mahal Na Mahal Kita with Diether Ocampo and Rico Yan as rivals for her "bad girl" character named Mela. Mela was going steady with Mr. Bad Boy (Diether) until she meets Mr. Perfect (Rico) who does not care about her. Challenged, she pursued Mr. Perfect who eventually learned to love her despite her reputation.
In 1999, this love triangle carried on in the movie version of Mula Sa Puso, and in the same year, Barretto and Ocampo figured in a love triangle with Maricel Soriano in Soltera.
In 2000, she played Carla, the ungrateful daughter of Vilma Santos' overseas worker mother in Anak who ran loose and wild for lack of guidance. Anak was also the Best Foreign Language Film entry of the Philippines for the 71st Academy Awards.
In 2001, she played a nun opposite Robin Padilla in Oops! Teka Lang...Diskarte Ko 'To (her first and so far only action-oriented film).
Barretto received her first Box Office Queen crown on the strength of the box office results of her 2002 releases: Got 2 Believe (the last movie of the late Rico Yan and her first and so far only romantic comedy film) and Kailangan Kita (her first film with Aga Muhlach as his leading lady and her first Gawad Urian-nominated performance). In Got 2 Believe, she played Toni, a wedding coordinator who believes in true love and is in search of finding Mr. Right. In Kailangan Kita, she played Lena, a daughter who forgoes her personal happiness to keep her family from falling apart.
For 2004's Milan (her first film with Piolo Pascual and her second Gawad Urian-nominated performance), Barretto received not only the Ms. RP Movies recognition but also her first Best Actress awards from FAP and FAMAS. In addition, Milan (with the films Dekada '70 and Panaghoy Sa Suba) was also exhibited in the New Cinema of the World section of the Cannes Film Festival, where the Filipino lead stars walked the red carpet. In Milan, she played Jenny, an imposing figure in the Filipino community of migrant workers, whose dreams of grandeur have clouded her need for personal relationships.
Barretto garnered three more Best Actress awards from PASADO, FAMAS (she was a rare back-to-back awardee), and PMPC for 2005's Nasaan Ka Man with Jericho Rosales and Diether Ocampo. This was also her third Gawad Urian-nominated performance. In Nasaan Ka Man, she played Pilar, a woman who carried on a controversial love affair with one of the men she grew up with, consequently suffering the wrath of the other man scorned. A revived MARIA CLARA awards (at least for that year) gave Barretto another Best Actress trophy but this time for 2005's Dubai where she played the object of affection of brothers John Lloyd Cruz and Aga Muhlach.
Barretto received her second Box Office Queen crown (shared with co-star Kris Aquino) for the 201-million-peso domestic gross of 2006's Sukob (her first and so far only horror-oriented film). In Sukob, she played Diana, who, together with her sister Sandy (Kris) is in search of the answer to the uncanny and terrible events that happened in their lives. It was only in March 2009 that another Star Cinema movie (You Changed My Life) surpassed the Philippine earnings of Sukob which up until then held the record as the highest-grossing Philippines-produced movie.
Station Transferrence
Barretto was an exclusive contract star of Star Cinema until she signed a two-picture contract with Viva Films on October 8, 2009. In a press interview, she confessed that she missed making movies.[2]
After 17 years with Star Magic, Barretto cut her ties with ABS-CBN when she signed a 2-year exclusive contract with rival station GMA-7 on November 25, 2009. Her last stunt on ABS-CBN was the finale number with Piolo Pascual at the Star Magic concert at the Araneta Coliseum on November 13, 2009.[3]
The Effective Endorser
Her first exposure on TV was through commercials: one is for a fast food chain (Jollibee) and the other for a telecommunications company (PLDT).
At 14, Claudine was the youngest Whisper commercial model along with Liza Macuja, Dyan Castillejo, Maricel Soriano, Christine Jacob and Aiko Melendez.
Claudine was also the endorser of Particles and Petite Monde (mark of a true image model: young, vibrant and dynamic), Mendez Medical Group, Salon de Manila, Salon West, Mohesaka Skin Care, FLAMES Scents, Detour, Ponds, First Quadrant, Maxipeel and Timex. Currently, Claudine is the endorser of the clothing line Folded and Hung, Secosana Bags, houses of Earth + Style, fragrances from Natasha, Belo Medical Group, 555 Carne Norte, Lactum, Pantene shampoo, Belo Essentials Whitening Day and Night Creams and Knorr Real Sarap All in One Seasoning. Claudine is included in the list of the Top 15 Effective Endorsers of QTV.
Personal life
Baretto was the ex-girlfriend of the late Rico Yan and actor Mark Anthony Fernandez. Barretto is married to actor Raymart Santiago, with whom she has a son, Rodrigo Santino[4], and an adopted daughter Sabina Natasha.
