Daan Roosegaarde (born 1979) is a Dutch artist and innovator. He is the founder of Studio Roosegaarde.

Early life and education

Daan Roosegaarde is born in 1979 in Nieuwkoop in the Netherlands.[1]

He studied at the Institute for the Arts in Arnhem (1997–1999), the Academy of Fine Arts in Enschede (2001–2003), and the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam (2003–2005).[1]

In 2006 Roosegaarde founded Studio Roosegaarde in the Netherlands, whereafter he opened a second studio in Shanghai in China.[2]

The studio partnered with Dutch fashion designers to develop the Intimacy dresses whose material reacts to the presence of other people.[3]

Roosegaarde is involved in New Dutch Digital Design,[4] a collective of artists who explore the boundaries between humans and cyberspace.[5] One of his characteristic works is Dune, an interactive dune landscape consisting hundreds of LEDs. Next to Dune one of the main works is called Lotus 7.0. This piece of art had its premiere in Paris,[6] and represents a living wall. When approaching the installation, hundreds of flowers made out of smart foils blossom. "We are at the dawn of a new nature," says Daan Roosegaarde.[5] In 2014 Roosegaarde opened the Van Gogh-Roosegaarde cycle path [7] between Nuenen and Eindhoven, inspired by The Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh. This path creates an interaction between light and poetry, just like Rainbow Station, an artwork that was launched in honour of the renovated 125 year old historic Amsterdam Central Station. Rainbow Station can be seen every day for a year for a brief moment within an hour after sunset.[8]

Pieces such as Dune and Smart Highway,[9] are tactile high-tech environments in which viewer and space become one. This connection, established between ideology and technology, results in what Roosegaarde calls "techno-poetry".[10] His often interactive work connects people with art and people with people.

Roosegaarde's most recent project is the Smog Free Project, using patented ion technology he is building the world's largest smog vacuum cleaner. The Smog Free Tower produces smog-free bubbles of public space, allowing people to breathe and experience clean air for free. Creating a tangible souvenir, Roosegaarde designed Smog Free Rings and Smog Free Cufflinks of compressed smog particles. By sharing Smog Free Jewelry, you donate 1000m3 of clean air to the city. [11]

Roosegaarde has won several prizes such as INDEX: Award 2013 & People's Choice Award,[12] Dutch Design Award [13] and the Charlotte Köhler Award in 2012.[14]

Public speaking

Roosegaarde (Born on 24 July 1979) is a frequent design lecturer, most notably at the Design Indaba Conference[15] in Cape Town in 2013 and TEDxBinnenhof,[16] the World Economic Forum in Davos,[17] and TV guest at De Wereld Draait Door[18] and Zomergasten 2013.[19]
