Adal was a Muslim Ethiopian sultanate founded by the Arab-descended Harari/Harla people. The people of Adal were Semitic and spoke an Ethio-Semitic language. Even many Adali nobles and their children were brought up in the court of the Ethiopian Emperor. The Somali and Oromo were Cushitic nomads that encroached upon Adal and many times attacked it.
