Kwon Hyuk (Template:Lang-ko; born November 10, 1992, in Seodaemun, Seoul, South Korea), better known by his stage name Dean, is a South Korean alternative R&B singer-songwriter and record producer. He has released one solo EP, 130 Mood : TRBL, as well as multiple collaborations with both American and South Korean artists.[1][2][3]
Life and career
Early life and career
Kwon Hyuk was born on November 10, 1992, in the Hongeun neighbourhood of Seodaemun district, Seoul.[1][4] He developed an interest in American hip hop and rap in middle school,[5] and began singing in high school.[6] At that time, he considered music as an "escape from studying"[5], rather than an occupation.[7] He initially wrote songs in his room, which he kept secret from his parents at first.[4] Although he was the first musician in his family, his parents enjoyed music and supported his decision to become an artist.[6]
He began his career at the age of sixteen, performing alongside hip-hop artist Keith Ape.[8] By eighteen, he was writing tracks for K-pop stars[8][9], under the name 'Deanfluenza'.[10] The name originated from actor James Dean, whose rebellious image appealed to him, and the word 'influenza', signifying his desire to make a "viral" impact on the music industry.[10]
At the age of twenty, he was under the tutelage of Joombas Music Group CEO and producer Hyuk Shin, employed with the songwriting team of the Los Angeles-based company whose works include EXO’s "Growl" and Justin Bieber's "One Less Lonely Girl".[1][5][11] He was credited on tracks including Exo's "Black Pearl" and VIXX's "Voodoo Doll".[1]
2015: U.S. and South Korean debut
Dean made his musical debut in the United States in July 2015 with the single "I'm Not Sorry", featuring Grammy winner Eric Bellinger.[2] This set him apart from other Korean singers who have collaborated with American artists, the vast majority of which began their careers in Korea.[7][12] That year, he also collaborated with Mila J on "Here & Now" and Anderson .Paak on "Put My Hands on You".[1][12][13][14]
He made his South Korean debut in October 2015. His second single, "Pour Up", featuring Block B's rapper Zico,[11] won the 'Best R&B and Soul Song' award at the Korean Music Awards on February 29, 2016.[15][16][17] He performed "Pour Up" and "I'm Not Sorry" on You Hee-yeol's Sketchbook on January 8, 2016.[18][19] He also collaborated with Korean hip-hop artists Zion.T, Crush, and Junggigo on the single "247"[11][20][21], Dok2 on "I Love It"[11], and Dynamic Duo on "What's Up".[22]
2016: SXSW and first EP 130 Mood : TRBL
In January 2016, he released the single "What 2 Do", featuring Crush and Filipino-American singer Jeff Bernat.[23] The same month, he appeared JTBC show Two Yoo Project Sugar Man as a producer, arranging a well-received version of the Mose song, "It's Love" for a performance by iKON members.[24][25][26]
In February, he was the first Asian artist to perform at Spotify House at SXSW, alongside international artists including Miguel and Chvrches.[8][27] U.S. magazine Spin wrote that "the Bryson Tiller-indebted youngster — and recent Universal signee — had some attendees comparing him to a young Usher."[28] Vibe commented that he had a "smooth sound that reminds you of 90s era Usher to this year’s Bryson Tiller flow."[29] He additionally performed at the Hypetrak Stage[30][31] and at SXSW's K-Pop Night Out.[27]
On March 21, he released a music video for "Bonnie & Clyde", a track from his upcoming EP 130 Mood : TRBL. In the video, he played the role of Clyde in a reenactment of Bonnie and Clyde.[32] On March 23, a music video for another track, "D (Half Moon)" featuring Gaeko was released and a showcase was held in Gangnam, Seoul.[33][34][35] The seven-track EP was released the following day. Its title is named after the racing number '130', which James Dean had painted on his car, and which embodies the same experimental spirit he feels about music[36], while 'TRBL' is a stylisation of 'trouble'.[37] The album is intended to narrate a love story through its consecutive tracks[38][39] and was written and produced by Dean along with collaborators. Several of the tracks were previously released as singles.[40] The EP charted at #10 on the Gaon Album Chart,[41] #3 on the Billboard World Albums chart, and #22 on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart[42], while "Bonnie & Clyde" entered Billboard's World Digital Songs chart at #12. Billboard K-Town columnist Jeff Benjamin described the chart position on the Heatseekers Albums chart uncommon for a K-pop act, and especially for a debut release. He said that the album was an "impressive debut creatively that pushes R&B ahead into the future with its compositions and collaborations -- notably the woozy "Pour Up" featuring Zico of Block B, the Weeknd-recalling "21" and "What 2 Do" with Korean R&B star Crush and L.A. singer Jeff Bernat."[42] Horizon Asia magazine labeled the EP as a pioneering album, introducing a new music genre to the mainstream K-pop world.[39] The review described "D (Half Moon)" "the most romantic yet saddest song in the album" with "Dean's unique sonorous vocals" in a song "laden with vocal harmony and echoes which highlight a sense of hollowness."[39] Also in March, Dean appeared for the second time on Two Yoo Project Sugar Man, this time arranging Hey's "Je T'aime" for Winner members.[43][44]
In April, he was announced as part of the lineup for the Jisan Valley Rock Festival on July 22-24[45], and appeared in Vogue Korea's April 2016 issue with 'Club Eskimo'[46], an informal group of artists with whom he has performed in South Korea's underground clubs.[47]
