The Defence Bioengineering and Electromedical Laboratory (DEBEL) is an Indian defence laboratory of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Located in Bangalore, its main function is the research and development of technologies and products in the area of Life support, medical and physiological protection systems for the Indian Armed Forces. DEBEL is organised under the Life Sciences Directorate of DRDO. The present director of DEBEL is Mr UK Singh.

History

DEBEL was formed in April 1976 by bringing together the Aero Electroengineering Unit (AEEU) of ADE and the Electromedical Instrumentation Division (EMID) of LRDE, located nearby. Since 23 June 1992, the facility has been functioning from its own independent premises located at the ADE campus.

Today, DEBEL is one of the few DRDO laboratories dedicated to both R & D work for the Services and also spin off use to the civilian population.
