Buzkut is an American alternative metal band from Detroit, Michigan. They released their debut album Duality in 2024 through Moshpit Records.[1] They remain active since 2021.

History

[edit]

The band was formed in August 2021 by vocalist and guitarist Grayson Rupp and drummer Noah Dombroski as "Shadow Theory" and began recording an EP which would never be released entitled Twist. Noah Dombroski is the youngest son of Sponge lead singer Vinnie Dombroski. The band's idea dates back to 2017 when Noah and Grayson both began learning to play the drum kit, but it wasn't possible until late 2020, when Rupp began playing guitar and Dombroski began playing bass guitar. In recordings, Rupp records lead guitar, rhythm guitar and vocals while Dombroski records bass guitar and drums. In 2021, their demo EP Twist went no where and began recording a different type of sound the next year. The band's next idea for music came from a phase that guitarist and vocalist Grayson Rupp when through when he was into more of a death metal style of music. The band's EP Twist was recorded from August 2021 to September 2021 and contained 8 tracks. The EP showed the band to be more of a thrash metal sound and Rupp didn't take much interest into thrash metal, except for some cited and highly influential albums such as ...And Justice for All by Metallica and South of Heaven by Slayer. The band would later decide to do a death metal and black metal sound in early 2022 and renamed the band Deathworx. They would record a 10-track studio album that would be self-titled and self-released. They dropped this genre later after Rupp's death metal phase.

In 2022, they renamed the band to Deathworx and began heading into more of a death metal path for the genre on the recorded songs for the album that would be self-titled if it was released. The album was meant to be released in June of 2022 but technically problems occurred, pushing the release date back to March 2023. The band later dropped the death metal sound in late 2023 and changed their name in 2024. In 2024, the band changed their name once again to Buzkut and began working on their 12 track debut album entitled Duality. After quitting on the death metal idea, the band began working with genres such as nu metal, rap metal and alt metal instead. The album is a follow up of the release of the three singles "Move", "Split" and "Gasoline", all released in 2024 before the album. The band would stay with the nu metal and alternative metal because of guitarist and vocalist Grayson Rupp's fascination with the genres, the sound could be compared to Taproot's album Gift. The band happens to take influence from band's of the state of Michigan including Taproot and Factory 81. The band worked on their first single "Split" in March 2024 and while Rupp was writing the guitar parts for the song, while originally the parts where supposed to be more "top string" elements, Rupp began writing power chords instead for openings and choruses. The song "Split" shifted the band's genre style from heavier metal to alternative metal. The band's name Buzkut comes from Grayson Rupp's idea to get a buzz cut in mid 2023, and later in 2024, drummer Noah Dombroski would also get a buzz cut. Part of it is also from the band's big influence on rap metal band Limp Bizkit, replacing each letter "I" in Bizkit with a "U".

As of 2024, vocalist and guitarist Grayson Rupp is the manager of the band's label Moshpit Records and possibly finding artists to sign to the label's division Stick Records. Since then, Rupp has been focused on the recording and release of the band's debut album Duality and since then, Rupp has signed no artists to the label currently. Rupp would work on signing artists after the record and release of the album. The band seemed to be "not as worried about the record label thing" and more focused on recording music and "just trying to make a hit or just get the stuff released" as of 2024. This label business project wasn't currently effecting the band because of the past years (2021-2023) and recording music and not getting it released because of having problems with self-releasing singles and albums. The band's current focus on recording music was bigger than the past years, and the band was originally supposed to released in either 2022 or 2023 and then with genre changes from thrash metal to death metal to nu metal and alternative metal, put the band behind schedule and they ended up releasing the album in 2024.

Drummer Noah Dombroski's dad Vinnie Dombroski gained fame in the mid 1990s after the release of Rotting Pinata through Sony Music as the frontman of Sponge. They released their single "Plowed" which reached number 5 on the US Alternative Airplay Chart. They also had two other hit singles "Molly (16 Candles Down the Drain)" which reached number 3 on the US Alternative Airplay Chart and "Wax Ecstatic (To Sell Angelina)" which reached number 18 on the US Mainstream Rock Chart. from the album Wax Ecstatic released in 1996 through Sony Music.

Musical style

[edit]

The band's style is a blend of most heavy metal sub-genres of the 1990s and 2000s. Some genres to be listed include nu metal, rap metal, alternative metal and groove metal. The band's music can be compated to Limp Bizkit, Rage Against the Machine, Korn, Linkin Park and Metallica. Some other closer comparison include Taproot, Reveille and Shuvel.
