Genevieve Stokes (born Genevieve Curtis; April 12, 2001) is an American singer-songwriter. Her debut EP Swimming Lessons was released on March 5th, 2021. Her second EP Catching Rabbits[1] was released on April 7th, 2023[2] Her music has been described as ethereal, and translucent with lo-fi piano progressions and modern alt-pop themes.[3][4]

Early life

[edit]

Genevieve Stokes was born on April 12, 2001. She was raised and resides in Portland, Maine.[5] Her mother is Carey Stokes-Curtis[6] and her father Wayne Curtis. Stokes started playing self taught piano at age 8[7][8] and started songwriting at age 9 on her older sister's piano.[9][10] She also took piano lessons and within a year she was performing frequently at local open mic nights[11]. She is the second youngest of five children; she has an older sister Madeline Haze Curtis[12], an older sister Gem Stokes, a brother Oliver Curtis and younger sister Margot Curtis. At 14, Stokes enrolled in the Maine Academy of Modern Music.[13]

She graduated from Falmouth High School in 2019[14], and was picked up by her first manager Brian Kierulf in the same year through posting demos on SoundCloud.[15][16]

Career

[edit]

Stokes has worked with producers such as Tony Berg[17], Brian Kierulf[18], Gerard Lange, Fiona Stocks-Lyons and Pete Cafarella. She was signed to Atlantic Records in 2021.[19]

The Catching Rabbits EP was recorded in Sound City Studios in LA with Brian Kierulf.[20] Matt Chamberlain played drums on the EP.[21]

Stokes told Rolling Stones;

"Catching Rabbits’ is my more uplifting take on the phrase ‘chasing rabbits’— that it’s possible to achieve what seems out of reach, and to escape the tempting illusions of the mind."[22]

Being asked about inspiration for music video direction;

Mainly from movies! The Wickerman, Donnie Darko, The Lighthouse, and a few different Alice in Wonderland adaptations were my biggest inspirations for this EP.” - Stokes, 2023.

Stokes moved back to her childhood home in 2023 after taking up temporary residence in New York and then New Orleans.[23]

She wrote her album With a Lightning Strike on two pianos, one of which had been left in uninsulated garage though the seasons, and the other gifted to her by a piano tuner named Vinny after tuning the aforementioned piano in the garage, both of which are upright (console) pianos, at her parent's home in Portland, Maine.[24] Some of the lyrics from the album date back years. Unlike on previous projects, instead of trying for the flawlass take this time around Stokes was recording vocals in only a few studio rehearsals.[23]

In relation to to being asked about her music video Dreamer, Stokes states;

"Sometimes I get so caught up in the creation of imaginary worlds that I forget how magical my real life is,” says Stokes. “I wanted to share what summers in Maine with my best friends feel like, because my experiences here and the people I love make up so much of who I am. It was fully filmed and edited by best friend Abbie Pitre, and includes a bunch of my favorite places and people."[25]

She has mentioned that she shot a couple of her music videos, and photographs in her parent's back garden and that it has been a very magical place for her, also stating that she written songs about the garden.[26]

Stokes has said that she struggled with shame and self doubt, making music from a place of self acceptance especially with being very open and vulnerable emotionally in her music.[27]
