Harry Mack is an American hip-hop musician from Portland, Oregon. He is known for improvising lyrics on the spot on front of an audience, where he "weaves rap lyrics together using any random prompt: word suggestions from his audience, a street sign that may have caught his attention and even people's clothing."[1]
Music career
[edit]Mack learned to play the violin at age 7 and then the drums in the 5th grade. Drumming became his focus and he went on to study Jazz drumming at the University of Southern California, where he got to study under notable jazz musicians including Peter Erskine and Bob Mintzer. After graduating from USC, he pursued a career as a jazz drummer, but found himself "scraping it together by playing shitty bar gigs and teaching drum lessons".[1]
Mack began freestyling for fun at the age of 10,[2] but his career began when he first 'went viral in 2017'[1] for a freestyle performance he did in Venice Beach, which has received over 3 million views on YouTube.[3] This video was shown on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and Power 106 (KPWR).[4][5] On Power 106, Mack freestyled in front of rapper Joey Badass, where Mack implemented each of the latter's suggestions into his freestyle.[6] Joey Badass said of Mack "He nice off the top... Yeah, he swift with it... I was trying to throw difficult words... He still had it."[5]
He went on to perform in front of several other established rappers on Power 106, including Soulja Boy,[7] Macklemore[8] and Kendrick Lamar.[9] Lamar said of Mack "You great in my eyes because you inspire me... We inspire each other... He was going off."
Mack has gone on to create two series on YouTube: Guerilla Bars and Omegle Bars. In Guerilla Bars, he walks the streets in major cities in several countries and performs freestyles in front of groups of strangers. In Omegle Bars, he uses the online chat website Omegle and freestyle raps to the person he is randomly paired with. He posts clips from these videos on TikTok, where he has received over 65 million likes.[10][1]
According to Social Blade, Mack is projected to amass at least 1 billion YouTube views in his career lifetime.
Mack has collaborated with Starbucks,[11] the cast of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, and the National Basketball Association (NBA),[12] In 2023, he collaborated with Tom Brady for a paid partnership with Hertz Global Holdings, where Brady said "That's unbelievable right there. Amazing."[13]
