The Monégasque princely family is composed of the House of Grimaldi, which consists of Albert II and his relatives. The prince and most members of the princely family are styled as Serene Highness followed by prince/princess and any other subsidiary titles. Other members, particularly cousins or other distant relatives of Albert II, simply hold hereditary titles bestowed upon their parents. The Prince of Monaco is usually titled Sovereign Prince of Monaco within Monaco.

The main members of the princely family are Albert II, Sovereign Prince of Monaco, Charlene, Princess of Monaco, and their children Jacques, Hereditary Prince of Monaco, and Princess Gabriella, Countess of Carladès.

Albert II has two confirmed childrend out of wedlock, Jazmin Grace Grimaldi, born in 1992 and Alexandre Grimaldi, who was born in 2005; they are not included in the line of succession.

Extended members

[edit]

Extended members of the princely family are members that are descendants of Princess Caroline and Princess Stéphanie, all of whom are members of the House of Grimaldi, but not Prince or Princesses of Monaco or styles as Serene Highness. The prince's late aunt, Princess Antoinette, Baroness of Massy, also has descendants.

Descendants of Princess Caroline

[edit]

Princess Caroline has three children from Stefano Casiraghi, who died in 1990. She thereafter married Ernst August, Prince of Hanover in 1999.

All of Caroline's children but Princess Alexandra have children.

Descendants of Princess Stéphanie

[edit]

Princess Stéphanie is currently unmarried, has four children, and married twice. Her first husband, Daniel Ducruet, she married in 1995 and divorced a year later, with whom she had three children. She married again to Adans Lopez Peres in 2003, and then divorced him the year following, with whom she had no children. She had one child from her bodyguard out of wedlock, Jean Gottlieb, Camille Gottlieb.
The children of Princess Stéphanie are:

Only one of her is married with children; Louis has one child.

Line of succession

[edit]

The Monégasque line of succession follows male-preference primogeniture, a system where only females can inherit in certain circumstances, often leading to serial male rulers. Albert II had twins in 2014, a boy being born two minutes before a girl. Due to the rules of succession, Jacques automatically took precedence, and he was also born first. However, if the twins had been two boys, it has been hypothesized that the heir would be the first-born. Thus, Jacques, Hereditary Prince is the current heir to the Monégasque throne. He is also Marquis of Baux. Following him is his sister, Princess Gabriella, Countess of Carladès, who is thus followed by the prince's sisters and their descendants in order of birth.
