NEW Party (Mongolian: ШИНЭ Нам, romanizedSHINE Nam. ШН) formerly Citizen’s Coalition for Justice Party (Mongolian: Шударга Иргэдийн Нэгдсэн Эвсэл Нам, romanizedShudarga Irgediin Negdsen Evsel Nam, ШИНЭН) is a political party in Mongolia. The party was founded in June 2019 amidst the 2018-2019 Mongolian protests and was officially registered as a political party by the Supreme Court of Mongolia in September.[1]

The NEW Party emerged as a big-tent political organization, uniting many social movements, non-governmental organizations and opposition forces against the MPP and DP dominated political establishment and institutionalized corruption in Mongolia.

History

[edit]

In 2004, A group of young activists, led by Tsendsürengiin Gantulga organized a demonstration against government policies. The movement led to the creation of the "Healthy Society, Civil Movement", a non-governmental organization and later the Civil Movement Party in 2007.

Following the disputed 2008 election and the subsequent 2008 riots, the party turned quiet due to supposed government suppression of political opposition. However in 2019, the Citizen’s Coalition for Justice Party was founded by then MP Jalbasürengiin Batzandan and MP Luvsanvandangiin Bold.[2]

In the 2020 election, The party formed the New Coalition, an electoral coalition with the Mongolian Republican Party, Truth and Right Party and Mongolian National Democratic Party.[3] The coalition compromised of a total of 11 political parties and 109 non-governmental organizations but failed to win any seats in the State Great Khural, winning only 5.35% of thevote.

Following their defeat, the party adopted the "New Revolution" as party manifesto and replaced their leader Jalbasürengiin Batzandan with Tsendsürengiin Gantulga.

Ahead of the 2024 election, The party changed its name to the NEW Party in January 2024[4] and formed an electoral coalition with the Mongolian Traditional United Party, called the New United Coalition.[5] The coalition didn't secure any seat and won 4.79% of the vote.

Ideology

[edit]

The New Party is a big-tent, catch-all party that leans socially to the right while adopting left-leaning economic policies. It positions itself as a popular third-party alternative[6] for Mongolia, with a focus on tackling corruption[7] and promoting equality and development.

The party manifesto, "New Revolution" is made up 18 key "revolutions". Out of the 18 revolutions, 9 of them are focused on economic changes and the other 9 on political reforms. These include drafting a new constitution named the Ikh Zasag and renaming the country to the "State of Great Mongolia", referencing Mongolia's historic past. Party officials compared Mongolia to an old UAZ-469 racing against a Japanese Land Cruiser and an American Hummer. Supposedly, the manifesto is "a prescription for healing Mongolia's socioeconomic woes, without the need of shedding blood or firing bullets".[8]

The 5 major revolutions proposed by the party are; the Revolution of Justice, Revolution of Wealth Equality, Industrial Revolution, Technological Revolution, Economic and Financial Revolution[9]
