The State visit by Pope Francis to Indonesia is a state and pastoral visit made by Pope Francis, in his capacity as the supreme leader of the Catholic Church and head of state of the Vatican City. The visit is planned to take place from 3 to 6 September 2024 and will visit Jakarta. Previously, several sources stated that Pope Francis would also visit East Nusa Tenggara and West Kalimantan.[1]
Background
[edit]The Indonesian government, through the Indonesian President Joko Widodo, has sent an official invitation to the Holy See regarding this visit.[2] The invitation was officially delivered by the Apostolic Nuncature of the Holy See of the Vatican to Indonesia, His Eminence Archbishop Piero Pioppo on March 25, 2024 to the Holy See. The Indonesian government hopes that this visit will not only bring significance to Catholicism in Indonesia, but also to the harmony of all religious communities. Pope Francis himself has planned to visit Indonesia since 2020, but the visit could not be carried out due to the Covid-19 Pandemic.[3]
According to the Indonesian Ambassador to the Holy See, Michael Trias Kuncahyono , Pope Francis' visit to Indonesia will be a historic visit, after the last time a Pope visited Indonesia was Pope John Paul II on 8-12 October 1989.[4]
