Escape from Mogadishu (Korean모가디슈; RRMogadisyu) is a 2021 South Korean action drama film, directed by Ryoo Seung-wan and starring Kim Yoon-seok, Jo In-sung, Heo Joon-ho and Kim So-jin.[4] The film, based on real events, is set during the Somali Civil War and the two Koreas' efforts to be admitted to the United Nations in the late 1980s and early 1990s. It depicts details of perilous escape attempt made by North and South Korean embassy workers stranded during the conflict.[5]

With a production cost of ₩24 billion,[2] Escape from Mogadishu was anticipated to release in summer of 2020 but its release was postponed due to the resurgence of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was released theatrically on July 28, 2021, by Lotte Entertainment in IMAX format.[6][7] It received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised its action scenes, humorous plot, direction, and its vivid acting performances.[8]

On accounting its box office performance, the film ranked at number 5 at the worldwide box office in the first week of August 2021 as per American media Screen Daily report on August 11.[9] Within 56 days of release, it surpassed 3.5 million admissions, and became the first Korean film in 2021 to do so.[10] Currently it is the highest-grossing film of 2021 in South Korea, with gross of US$29.35 million and 3.61 million admissions, as per Korean film council.[11]

Escape from Mogadishu was selected as the South Korean entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 94th Academy Awards.[12] It also won 6 awards at 30th Buil Film Awards including 'Best Film' award.[13]

Plot

In 1991, Mogadishu, the capital city of Somalia, is torn by civil war. Meanwhile, both the North and South Korean embassies are lobbying to be admitted into the United Nations and looking towards the Somalian government for support.

Dae-jin, an intelligence officer working for the South Korean embassy, is tasked with passing the gifts from the South Korean embassy to the president of Somalia. He meets Han Sin-seong, the chief ambassador in Somalia, who is running late to meeting with the Somalian president and thus immediately takes the gifts. While en route to the presidential estate, rogue rebel forces intercept Sin-seong and rob the gifts. They further spray the vehicle with bullets, disabling the vehicle and forcing Sin-Seong to run to the presidential estate with his secretary, Soo-cheol. The two men miss the appointment by fifteen minutes and are thus denied an audience with the president. As Sin-Seong attempts to explain their delay, he notices the North Korean ambassador, Rim Yong-su, walking out of the meeting room. In his view, Somalia's support for North Korea will prevent South Korea from joining the UN. Sin-seong initially believes Yong-su to be the mastermind behind his robbery, but it is revealed that Yong-su's intelligence officer, Tae Joon-ki, was the one who bribed the rebels to delay and rob Sin-seong. Knowing what happened, Yong-su tells Joon-ki that this was a shameless act that was unhelpful and possibly detrimental to the North Korean efforts.

The same night, Dae-jin and Sin-seong contemplate next steps. Dae-jin suddenly tossed out some documents he got on hand. Two hours before he met Sin-seong back at the embassy, he actually went to a US journalist, bribed him with a carton of cigarettes and got some photos from him which had some rebels with weapons in them. Dae-jin told Sin-seong that it was the North Koreans who had been arming the rebels but Sin-seong questioned the validity where Dae-jin replied that none of that is important as long as the pictures would be published by the US journalist as the North Koreans has been arming the rebels all along thus it would be possible to sway the votes towards the South as the government would condemn the North for doing so thus, Dae-jin took the evidence and had a meeting with one of the official and family member of the Somalian president.

Next day, Sin-seong meets with a Somalian official and shows him the photos. To his surprise, the official does not care and instead blatantly asks for bribes. Realizing that the Somalian government is corrupt, Sin-seong leaves the meeting contemplating whether to pay the bribe. At his hotel, Sin-seong notices Yong-su moving gifts into the official's car. Enraged, Sin-seong confronts Yong-su about the robbery earlier and the bribe. Yong-su counters that the South was no better for framing the North for supplying weapons to the rebels. Before the two come to blows, shots ring out outside the hotel—the war has reached Mogadishu.

As the city erupts into chaos, Sin-seong, Dae-jin, Yong-su, and Joon-ki are stuck in the hotel on lockdown while the government forces attempt to suppress the rioters. As night approaches, the other residents in the South Korean embassy were praying for the safe return of Sin-seong and Dae-jin and suddenly, the doorbell rang. As it turns out, Sawma, the driver for Sin-seong, had pressed the button and stumbled past the hedge and was laying on the floor, badly injured. Soo-cheol carried Sawma into the building and laid him on the bed. However, he found the scarf around Sawma's neck bearing the markings of the rebels of General Aidid. While contemplating on what to do with Sawma in fear that he was actually a rebel, the police suddenly arrives and tried to barge their way into the compound. Just then, both Sin-seong and Dae-jin arrived back to the embassy and warned that the police were trespassing on South Korean soil and it took Sin-seong's threat to call the chief of police to tell him what his officers has done that the police backed off and left the compound. While that was going on, Sawma had escaped the premise through the rear and while running on the streets, the police caught up to him and struck him with a baton with a blow to his head, killing him instantly and leaving him to die on the streets. The next day, the chaos continues and riots has broken out at every area of Mogadishu, even outside all the national embassies in the city. Aidid also sent messages to all embassies in Mogadishu to either work with them to topple the corrupt government or be deemed an enemy of the rebels and be prepared to be slaughtered for assisting the standing government. Sin-seong, fearing for his family's lives, tried sending his wife, Myeung-hee, back to South Korea but Dae-jin informed Sin-seong that due to the chaos, all banks and travel agencies has been shut thus everyone was stranded in Mogadishu. Furthermore, the rebels started pelting every embassy in Mogadishu with rocks and Molotov Cocktails with the North Korean embassy suffering attacks non-stop. Yong-rim then ordered his staff to burn all the confidential documents and just as it was about to get worse, the Somalian military finally retaliated and ran the rioters away. Both the North and south delegations soon realized that the situation has spiraled out of control and with both power and communication networks all being broken, they had to leave the country as quickly as possible. Sin-seong and Dae-jin headed to the airport and tried to find a passage out of Mogadishu but they were sent back as they couldn't communicate back to South Korea to ask for assistance and without official documents of clearance from the South Korean government, they couldn't leave. The North Koreans had it worse as they couldn't make it towards the airport and was already sent back. Both sides were forced to return back to their respective embassies. Joon-ki, desperate to get everyone in the North Korean embassy out of the stricken country, tried to get the rebel leader that he had employed to rob Sin-seong previously to the embassy for his assistance to get passage passes for everyone in the embassy to get towards the airport and leave the country. However, the rebel leader betrayed Joon-ki just as he stepped foot into the main compound and the rebels started beating the men, robbing the entire place and also started sexually harassing the women. Joon-ki was beaten heavily but was spared as Joon-ki once paid the rebels well for the job and they promptly left. With nothing left in the embassy and quickly running out of supplies, Joon-ki and Yong-su grabbed whatever they could take and led everyone out of the North Korean embassy to escape in the middle of the night.

With Yong-su holding an AK-47 and Joon-ki with a knife leading the way past the streets filled with dead bodies, wild ravaging dogs and roaming rebel parties, the North Koreans stumbled upon a group of child soldiers. The child soldiers then started pointing guns at the group and started imitated firing sounds. The children in the North Korean posse soon realized what was going on, pretended that they were shot and collapsed on the ground. Soon the adults realized what was going on too and followed what the children did and also laid on the ground, pretending that they too got shot. While the child soldiers were happily spraying lead over the posse's head in their pseudo victory, the posse escaped but as the gunshots from the child soldiers drew in more rebels towards the spot, the North Koreans had to move swiftly and somehow, they stumbled just right outside the South Korean embassy. Yong-su, running out of options and seeing that the South Korean embassy was still intact and relatively well, told Joon-ki that the best decision for the entire posse to survive is to ask the South Koreans for help. Joon-ki however disagreed as both sides are still in a tenuous relationship and if they were to ask the South Koreans for help, they would be labelled as traitors to their country. Yong-su retorted that being a traitor would be better than risking everyone's life just for honour and having so many women and children in the posse, he couldn't care much anymore and their safety is the upmost importance thus he decided to parlay with the South Koreans for entry into the compound by shouting right in front of the main gate of the South Korean embassy. Sin-seong still had reservations that the North Koreans might use this as a ploy to spy on them and contemplated on letting them enter. Just then, a group of rebel troops were closing towards the South Korean embassy firing their guns wildly in the air, looking for blood. With the North Koreans now out in the open and in the line of danger, Sin-seong relented and opened the gates of the compound to let the North Koreans in.

Despite being the same race and ethnicity, both sides were still wary of each other. As dinner was served, both parties were sitted at the same table but the North Koreans dare not even move a muscle first in fear that the South Koreans had laced the food with poison with intentions to kill them out. Frustrated with the distrust, Sin-seong grabbed Yong-su's rice bowl, swapped it around with his and ate Yong-su's rice proving that it wasn't laced with poison. Relieved, both sides started eating and even started sharing food. Dae-jin, sensing an opportunity to use the dinner scenario as a ploy for propaganda, slyly took picture of the scene but Joon-ki realized Dae-jin's intentions and confronted him about it. Both men soon got into blows and it took both Yong-su and Sin-seong to step in and tear them both apart and lamented that the main point isn't about political ideology anymore but the sheer survival of both groups and working together to find a way out of Mogadishu. Sin-seong then drew out a map of Mogadishu and came out with a plan. Sin-seong suggested that at the break of dawn the next day, both ambassadors would head to other embassies to request for help with Sin-seong heading to the Italian embassy while Yong-su heading to the Egyptian embassy. As planned, both parties headed out of the South Korean embassy at the crack of dawn with Dae-jin leading the front and Joon-ki in another vehicle behind. As they made their way across the war-torn city, the vehicles stopped at a junction and Dae-jin spotted a group of rebels executing civilians. Panicked, Dae-jin started to reverse at high speed but due to Joon-ki's vehicle being stationary, Dae-jin's vehicle crashed into Joon-ki's vehicle and soon drew a crowd of rebels who surrounded the two parties. Finding no other resource, Dae-jin floored the gas pedal and drove past the crowd surrounding them with Joon-ki following suit while the rebels were firing shots at them. Once both parties were out of the danger zone, they split up and headed to their respective destination.

Joon-ki and Yong-su reached the Egyptian embassy and found that it was filled with refugees and the Egyptians could not offer any help for the them. On the other side, Dae-jin and Sin-seong also managed to reach the Italian embassy but had no luck getting their government to assist in the evacuation. However, the Italian themselves were glad to help them evacuate towards Kenya but told Sin-seong that they could not ferry the North Koreans out as they had no diplomatic ties to them and could only ferry the South Koreans out. Sin-seong then came out with an idea and told the Italians that the North Koreans had actually defected to the South and due to the conflict happening now, they could not prove it till they got back and the Italians bought the ruse and allowed the entire party to enter the plane prepared for them but the Italians then told Sin-seong that they had to get to the Italian embassy by 4pm or else the deal is off. As Dae-jin and Sin-seong reached back to the embassy compound, no one came to open the door even after Dae-jin's constant honking and Sin-seong feared that the North Koreans had been overrran and killed. Just then, the North Koreans opened the gates and looking that everyone in safe, Sin-seong and Dae-jin entered the compound and soon started sharing the plan.

Yong-su saw that the cars were riddled with bullet holes and came out with a plan. He told everyone to grab all the books in the compound and tape them around the cars that they're using to get to the Italian embassy as a form of armour while also writing their own blood types on their arms and also making white flags to be used as a beacon of peace. Soon, the convoy left the compound and headed towards the Italian embassy. As they made their way through the city, it coincides with the prayer time of the Islamic practices of Somalia and with the rebels praying, the convoy managed to pass by the rebels unscathed. As they made their way, they were stopped by a government roadblock. While Dae-jin was showing his diplomatic documents and trying to broker a passage for the entire convoy to go thru with the Somalian officer, one of Yong-su's staff who was driving the last vehicle of the convoy accidentally stuck the wooden pole of the white flag out of the window. The checkpoint guard that was already pointing guns at the convoy mistaken the pole as a barrel of a weapon and soon started firing. As the chaos was ongoing, the convoy had to retreat back the way they came from but this time, the army was chasing them and the rebels had finished their prayers thus they too started attacking the convoy as they made their way across. After a rough journey, the convoy arrived right outside the Italian embassy but with both the army and the rebels chasing the convoy, Joon-ki's vehicle lagged behind but soon arrived at the embassy too. The army officer started firing his machine gun just as Joon-ki stopped. When the army officer realized that they were in front of the Italian embassy, he ordered the driver of his jeep to halt and stopped firing and suddenly, the street turned into a tense Mexican standoff. Sin-seong soon started to evacuate the people from Joon-ki's vehicle only to hear a continuous horn from Joon-ki's vehicle. Dae-jin opened the driver's door only to realize that Joon-ki has been shot dead in the process and slumped on the steering wheel. The Italians then opened the gates and as the Italians were getting feisty, both the governmental troops and the rebels retreated from the area and the entire Korean group buried Jong-ki in the Italian embassy and also hold a small memorial for him. The next day, both parties got into the plane as promised by the Italians and were flown to Kenya.

As the plane lands, Sin-seong realizes that both parties have separate delegations waiting to intercept their respective groups. Despite working together for survival in Somalia, Yong-su and Sin-seong conclude that they cannot be seen together, as neither nation will believe their experiences but instead send them to their respective military tribunals for court marshalling. As passengers exit the plane, the men shake hands, hug each other, and thank each other for their assistance before promptly splitting into their original groups to join their respective delegations. With one last look at the other's party, the ambassadors get on their respective buses and head in opposite directions.

Critical response

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 92% of 26 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 7.40/10. The website's critics consensus reads: "Its depiction of actual events is questionable, but Escape from Mogadishu is sleekly effective as an intelligent, well-acted action thriller."[8]

Kim Ji-eun reviewing for Newsis wrote that the action scenes were spectacular and humor though small stood out. She opined that the film vividly portrayed the horrors of war and the emotions of the characters, who faced it. Ji-eun felt that the exotic scenery of Morocco, the filming location, in itself was main character in the film. Ending her review she wrote, "It's not light entertainment. While the heavy historical background and setting dominate the screen, attention is focused on what kind of variable the restrained emotion that utilizes reality, will affect the box office performance."[36]

Kim Seong-hyeon writing for YTN opined that director Ryoo Seung-wan has reproduced the Somalia civil war in 1990 as if it is in 2021, and portrayed the tense situation so well that audience would experience it vividly. Mentioning the escape scene from the city center, Seong-hyeon said that it was highlight of the film. The reviewer felt that even in tense situations the humor was well placed. Seong-hyeon pointed out that some dialogues and actions of characters and of the Somali people seemed to contain intentional messages, but concluded the review as, "Nevertheless, Escape from Mogadishu offers intense cinematic pleasure enough to offset all of this."[37]

Kim Ji-won of Ten Asia opened the review writing, "Audio-visual pleasure and humanism that transcends ideology are properly harmonized. .... the action scenes contain the desperate psychology of the characters, bringing both entertainment and depth." She opined that the escape scene was highlight of the film, as the sequence conveyed the hopelessness of the characters, the horrors of war and the smell of sweat. She praised the performance of ensemble and wrote, ".... the supporting actors played their roles in their respective places, completing a lively story." Concluding her review Ji-won wrote, "Most of the Korean films, which are about inter-Korean conflicts, use a squeezing code of tears, but Escape from Mogadishu gives a neat impression with dramatic and simple expressions without being overly emotional."[38]

Cary Darling reviewing the film rated it with 4 out of 5 stars and opined, "[..] an involving and suspenseful action-thriller that Ryoo Seung-wan handles with flair, capably staging big action scenes — like the final, nerve-rattling drive to potential salvation — while not neglecting the human stories at their heart."[39]

Roger Moore reviewing the film rated it with 3.5 out of 5 stars, and wrote that the sets of firefights were as good as Ridley Scott's Black Hawk Down but the struggle to escape was more on human level rather than flamboyant. He liked the climax scenes where convoy of cars were moving in hail of Molotov cocktails and bullets, and concluded, "You want great action? Eschew the comic book movies and read a few subtitles. Escape from Mogadishu is in a league of its own this summer."[40]

Richard Kuipers of Variety praising the screenplay and direction by Ryoo Seung-wan said, "propulsive and intelligently written South Korean adventure thriller" has been 'energetically' directed. He also praised the performance of ensemble. Kuipers liking the climax of chasing bashed up cars on the streets of Mogadishu concluded, "Even though the outcome is never in doubt, the execution of this survival run is genuinely thrilling."[41]

Evan Dossey of Midwest Film Journal wrote that the characters of the film are aptly defined. He praised Ryoo Seung-wan's script and said, "[he] makes sure the conflicts are expressed through compelling, well-developed characters." Dossey concluded, "Escape from Mogadishu is a tense political thriller so don’t go in expecting an action film. [....] instead, prepare yourself for a well-written story of conflicting politics that asks where nationality must end for humanity to persevere."[42]

Panos Kotzathanasis reviewing for HanCinema highlighted three elements of the direction of Ryoo Seung-wan in the film. In his opinion the first was characterization, which has helped the actors to give laudable performance. The Second was action for which Kotzathanasis praised cinematography of Choi Young-hwan terming it as "exceptional cinematography" and editing of Lee Gang-hui. And the third was narrative, having humor, "[..] which appears in the most unexpected moments in order to lighten the mood". Kotzathanasis ends the review as, "Escape from Mogadishu is a great action movie that also works very well on a contextual level, due to the plethora of sociopolitcal elements included."[43]

Anna Smith for Deadline, wrote that Escape from Mogadishu is an engrossing film, which reminded her of Ben Affleck’s escape thriller Argo and 2005 French war film Joyeux Noël by Christian Carion. Smith liked the setting of scenes, characters and humor in the film and said, "Propelled by a naturally cinematic true story, the thriller blends action with humor and heart to crowd-pleasing effect."[44]

Lee Jutton of Film Inquiry, calling the humor in the film "a huge asset", concluded the review as "With stellar performances from everyone involved, especially Kim and Heo as the rival ambassadors turned temporary allies, it’s easy to become wholly engaged by a blockbuster like Escape from Mogadishu."[45]

Carla Hay of Culture Mix, praised the performance of lead cast in the film writing, "All of the principal cast members give solid performances." She opined that the film had many heart throbbing, uncertain and unexpected situations taking film to climax. Carla concluded the review writing, "And it’s a memorable depiction of what people will or will not do to hold on to patriotic allegiances when there are life-or-death decisions to be made."[46]

James Marsh reviewing for South China Morning Post rated the film with 3 out of 5 stars and said, "Ryoo, who specialises in testosterone-fuelled action cinema, makes good use of his dusty, arid locations to accentuate the characters' overwhelming sense of peril and vulnerability."[47]
