"Everything I Wanted" (stylized in all lowercase) is a song by American singer Billie Eilish. It was released on November 13, 2019.[1][2][3] The song peaked at number eight in the US, number three in the UK and within the top 10 in multiple other countries. The song was added in the reissue of When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?[4]

Background and release

In October, it was reported that Billie Eilish was working on new music.[5] In November 2019, the singer announced the release of two new songs and a music video for the song "Xanny".[6][7] She eventually revealed the song title and the release date of "Everything I Wanted" during an Instagram livestream on November 10, 2019.[8][9] She unveiled the cover art for the song a day later.[10] The song was featured in Eilish's advertisement for Beats by Dre headphones.[11]

Critical reception

"Everything I Wanted" received critical acclaim. Jon Caramanica from The New York Times wrote that the "keyboards that are both urgent and elegiac" and described the chorus as "draining yet hopeful".[12] Rolling Stone’s Brenna Ehrlich wrote that the song showed a "softer, sadder version of Eilish", and described the track as "a meditation on fame".[13] Allie Gemmill, writing for Teen Vogue, described the song as "moody, slow, and introspective — basically, a classic Billie jam". Gemmill also described the song as "dreamy" and "has [Eilish] apparently letting off some steam about her recent rocket to the top of the charts".[14]

Composition and lyrics

The song's lyrics deal with Eilish's relationship with her brother Finneas (pictured left), as well as a nightmare that the singer had.[15]

The song is written in the key of F♯ minor/A major and features an ethereal piano background with a significant use of reverb, a "gentle beatbox and soft, hazy keyboard riffs"[16]. The lyrics talk about Eilish's relationship with her brother Finneas,[15][17] as well as a nightmare that the singer had. The nightmare involved Billie "stepping off the Golden Gate and finding out that people didn’t like her as much as they let on".[15] The singer also said, "We started writing it because I literally had a dream that I killed myself and nobody cared and all of my best friends and people that I worked with basically came out in public and said, like, 'Oh, we never liked her.' In the dream, the fans didn’t care. The internet shit on me for killing myself, all this stuff, and it really did mess me up."[18]

Music video

Eilish released the self-directed music video for "Everything I Wanted" on January 23, 2020. In the video, she and her brother, Finneas, drive through many scenes reminiscent of places in California, before driving to a beach and then into the ocean. They are seen holding hands as the car breaks down and starts to flood.[19]

Live performances

Eilish performed the song live for the first time on the final stop of her When We All Fall Asleep Tour in Mexico City[20] and in an Apple Live acoustic show at the Steve Jobs Theatre in Cupertino.[citation needed]
