Wong began recording when she was a high-school student in China, releasing six albums during these years,[1] including many cover versions of hits by Teresa Teng. In 1989, she began her official recording career in Hong Kong with Cinepoly Records. They gave her the stage name Wong Jing Man along with an English pseudonym, Shirley Wong,[2] which was the title of her debut album. In 1997 she signed a 5-album recording contract with EMI. Cinepoly held one final set of recordings for another album but released these in stages on two EPs and on compilation albums, sometimes in competition with new studio releases from EMI. To date, Wong's official record companies have released more than two dozen compilations.
Many albums only have official titles in Chinese, and varying translations for some album and song names appear in the media.

The Cantonese song "In The Name of Love" (假愛之名, Gaa2 oi3 zi1 ming4) is not included in the Mainland China editions due to the fact that the lyrics mention opium.
This last Cantonese album of Faye Wong was supposed to be released in 1996/1997, however Cinepoly has decided to release the 10 tracks separately, i.e. 5 tracks in Toy (Faye Wong album) (EP, February 1997), 3 in Help Yourself (Faye Wong album) (EP, May 1997), 1 in Not for Sale (Compilation, 1997) and 1 in Faye Best (Compilation, 2002). In 2015, a fans of Faye Wong purchased the publishing rights from Cinepoly (now under Universal Music Group) and started a company called Chaotic Silence in order to piece the 10 tracks together in an album.[22]
