Because when you write it as "gave Japan ownership" it implies that someone else owned it before Japan to thus give it to Japan, which is false, Russia never owned these islands to begin with. The treaty signed didn't say that Russia gave Japan anything, it instead said that Russia recognises certain islands as being Japanese. undo

This is an absurd claim, and Wikipedia really need to keep on top of the propaganda on it's pages. The first ever time the Habomai were drawn on maps were by the Japanese, by the Matsumae clan in 1635, why is that not even worth a mention? So that is just ignored and instead a pro-Russia page is written, that tries to imply that the Russians were the first to discover and map them. Come on Wiki, WTH. undo
