Heera was born in Chennai. Her father Rajagopal, was a dermatologist in Apollo hospitals, Chennai. Her mother was a nurse in the Indian Army. She graduated in Psychology from Women's Christian College, Chennai.
Heera Rajagopal debuted in Tamil under Sathya Jyothi banner with the film Idhayam alongside Murali. This film was a major hit in Tamil as well as Telugu. She debuted in Bollywood with the film Amaanat co-starring Sanjay Dutt. In Malayalam she debuted with Mohanlal in Nirnayam. She appeared in notable films also featuring Kamal Haasan, Mammootty, Chiranjeevi, Ravichandran, Nagarjuna, Balakrishna, Ajith Kumar, Vineeth, Karthik, Ravi Teja, Ramesh Aravind, and Anil Kapoor.
