It is located in the province of Eastern Finland and is part of the Southern Savonia region. Neighbouring municipalities are Savonlinna, Varkaus, Leppävirta, Tuusniemi, Outokumpu and Liperi. The municipality is unilingually Finnish.

The, until late 1990s, only Nordic Orthodox monasteries New Valamo Monastery and the Lintula Holy Trinity Convent are located in Heinävesi.
