How to Get Away with Murder is an American serial legal drama series that premiered on ABC on September 25, 2014.[1] The series was created by Peter Nowalk, produced by Shonda Rhimes and distributed by ABC Studios. Viola Davis stars as a law professor at a prestigious Philadelphia university who, with her students, becomes entwined in a murder plot.[2] The series airs in the slot after Scandal on Thursdays at 10:00 p.m.[3]

The pilot was favorably received by critics, specifically praising Viola Davis' performance. The series premiere on September 25, 2014, had more than 14 million viewers on live broadcast, and over 20 million with DVR.[4]

Production

Development

On August 19, 2013, ABC bought the original concept from Shondaland Productions, produced by Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers. The script for the pilot episode was written by Grey’s Anatomy supervising producer Peter Nowalk.[5] ABC ordered the pilot on December 19, 2013.[6] The pilot episode was filmed in Los Angeles, California, at the University of Southern California, and in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, at Bryn Mawr College; and in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, at Ursinus College. It was directed by Michael Offer.[7] On May 8, 2014, ABC picked up the pilot to series for the 2014–15 television season.[8][9] At the Television Critics Association Press Tour in July 2014, it was announced that How to Get Away with Murder will be a limited series with only 15 or 16 episodes per season.[10] On October 9, 2014 ABC picked up the series for a full season of 15 episodes.[11] The smaller size of episode count stems from the deal for the series star Davis.[12][13]

Casting

Viola Davis plays the lead role

Matt McGorry was the first regular member to be cast, being announced on January 31, 2014. He plays the role of Asher, one of the students.[14] On February 6, Aja Naomi King was cast as one of the law students, the ambitious and confident Michaela Pratt.[15] On February 12, Jack Falahee, Alfred Enoch and Karla Souza were cast as other students.[16] On February 24, Charlie Weber was cast in the series regular role of Frank, associate of the professor.[17] On February 25, it was announced that Shonda Rhimes had cast Viola Davis in the leading role of the show.[18][19][20] Liza Weil from Shonda Rhimes' Scandal was cast as one of the professor’s two associates on February 27.[21] On March 1, it was announced Katie Findlay had won the role of another student in the pilot.[22] On March 2, Billy Brown was cast in the final series regular role of Annalise's love interest.[23] Director of Shonda Rhimes' dramas, Tom Verica, later was cast in the recurring role as the lead character's husband.[24]

On November 4 2014, it was announced that Oscar winner Marcia Gay Harden was cast in the second half of the first season on the secret major recurring role.[25][26]

Broadcast

How to Get Away with Murder airs on Thursdays at 10:00 p.m. ABC pushed Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal to 8 p.m. and 9 p.m., creating an all-night block of Shonda Rhimes-produced dramas airing on Thursdays, a rarity in American television.[3][27] It was announced July 14, 2014 that the series will debut September 25, 2014.[1] In Canada, the series airs with sim-subbing of advertising in same timeslot on CTV, though it airs three hours earlier in the Atlantic Time Zone in the Maritime Provinces on CTV Atlantic.[28][29] On October 13, 2014, it was announced that How to Get Away with Murder is also set to air on 158 territories..[30]

Annalise continues to tackle Rebecca's case for the murder of Lila when they find out that Greg's lawyers have been leaking things to the tabloids to make Rebecca look bad, resulting in a Gag Order. Michaela finds that she has a interview at a law firm, only to find out that it's her to be in laws that have called the meeting for a pre-nuptial agreement. Greg's team wants to exume Lila's body in order to show that Rebecca was the one that killed Lila; resulting in the defense coming to Annalise for help because they don't want the same things. Asher finds that he's help with the case when he sleeps with someone on the defenses team; The defense double crosses Annalise resulting in the judge ordering for the exumation of Lila's body because of all the evidence building up. After the exumation Bonnie finds out that not only did the evidence show that it could've been Rebecca who killed her, but Lila was also six weeks pregnant.

Flashforward: Wes goes to a motel to clean up Rebecca after Sam's murder, resulting in her wanting to take the fall for Sam's murder saying that she's already on trial for Lila's murder so she's already going to jail.
