Jonathan Raymond François Varane (born 9 September 2001) is a French professional footballer who plays as a defensive midfielder for EFL Championship club Queens Park Rangers.
Varane plays international football for Martinique, qualifying through his Martinique-born father. He made his debut on 11 October 2024, playing 73 minutes of a 0–1 away victory against Guadeloupe in a 2024–25 CONCACAF Nations League group stage match.
Career

[edit]Varane is a youth product of Lens, having joined the youth academy in 2007.[2] He signed his first professional contract with the club on 18 May 2021.[3] He made his professional debut with Lens in a 3–2 Ligue 1 loss to Nantes on 10 December 2021, coming on as a sub in the 90+2 minute.[4]
Loan to Rodez
[edit]On 24 January 2022, Varane joined Ligue 2 Rodez on loan until the end of the season.[5] He played six times for the club as they narrowly avoided relegation.
Sporting Gijón
[edit]On 24 August 2022, Varane signed with Spanish club Sporting de Gijón, being initially assigned to the reserves in Tercera Federación.[6] He made his first team debut on 3 January of the following year, replacing Nacho Martín in a 2–0 home win over Rayo Vallecano, for the season's Copa del Rey.
After the arrival of Miguel Ángel Ramírez as manager, Varane started to feature more regularly with the first team.[7] On 31 May 2023, he signed a new contract with the club until 2027, being definitely promoted to the main squad.[8]
Queens Park Rangers
[edit]On 4 August 2024, Varane signed for EFL Championship club Queens Park Rangers for an undisclosed fee.[9] On 10 August, he made his debut for the club, as a substitute, in a 3-1 loss against West Bromwich Albion in the league.[10]
Personal life
[edit]Varane is of Martiniquais descent through his father.[11] He is the half brother of former French international footballer Raphaël Varane.[2]
