Lougheed Town Centre (sometimes abbreviated as Lougheed Mall) is a shopping mall in Burnaby, British Columbia. It is located in the northeast corner of the city, near the border with Coquitlam.
By the number of stores, Lougheed Town Centre is the second largest mall in Burnaby (after Metropolis at Metrotown, the largest mall in the province) with 160 stores and services.
History
The centre (originally known as Lougheed Mall) opened in 1969 with anchors The Bay, Safeway, and Woolco and also had a three-screen movie theatre within the mall complex from 1969 to 2002. It was operated by Famous Players from its 1969 opening until it closed in February 1991, then sat vacant for a few months until the Theatre Near You chain took it over in November that year as a discount second-run cinema, running it until it closed for good in 2002 when mall management terminated the lease and had the former theatre renovated for additional retail space. The mall was expanded and doubled in size in 1986 and was extensively renovated in the early 2000s.
However, in the late 2000s, many stores began to close and business was at stake. A plan was put forth in 2013 to use up an entire section of the mall to build a Steve Nash Fitness World to attract more customers after losing 40% in the last 5 years. Despite this attempt, another plan was put in motion by Shape Property Corp, to redevelop the entire Lougheed Town Centre and replace it with an outdoor strip mall, which will also include 23 new high rise condos.[1]
Transportation
Lougheed Town Centre is also the major transit hub for northeast Burnaby and the neighbouring Tri-Cities area. Public transit, serviced by TransLink, have connections to the mall, with additional routes to Coquitlam, Port Moody, Port Coquitlam, New Westminster and Simon Fraser University.
The mall is also serviced by Lougheed Town Centre Station of the SkyTrain's Millennium Line and Expo Line). In addition to being the main public transit transfer point in the area, Lougheed Town Centre is also the terminus of the 97 B-Line, a bus rapid transit line from the mall to Coquitlam Centre and Coquitlam Central Station. Lougheed Town Centre was also the eastern terminus of the bus rapid transit 99 B-Line before the opening of the Millennium Line.
