Ludwig Anders Ahgren[1] (/ˈluːdwɪɡ ˈɑːɡrən/; born July 6, 1995)[2][3] is an American live streamer, YouTuber, podcaster, and esports commentator and competitor.[4] Ahgren is best known for his live streams on Twitch from 2018 though late 2021, and on YouTube beginning in late 2021, where he broadcasts video game-related content as well as non-video game-related content such as game shows, contests, and gambling.[5] He is also known for his work as an esports commentator at various Super Smash Bros. Melee tournaments. Since beginning streaming full-time on February 16, 2019, Ahgren had become one of the largest streamers on Twitch.[6]

From March 22, 2021, to May 12, 2021,[7] Ahgren was the most subscribed streamer on Twitch. While holding a widely publicized "subathon" event, Ahgren became the most subscribed Twitch streamer of all time on April 13, eventually reaching 283,066 subscribers at its peak, beating Twitch streamer Ninja for the record.[8]

On November 29, 2021, Ahgren announced that he had signed an exclusive deal with YouTube Gaming.[9]

Early life

Ahgren grew up in a French American bilingual household in Hollis, New Hampshire alongside his mother and sister, his father having passed away when he was 10.[citation needed]

He attended Hollis/Brookline High School in New Hampshire, graduating in 2013.[10] In 2012, he participated in his high school's production of Legally Blonde, starring as Warner.[10][11] In this time, he discovered Call of Duty commentary channels like Hutch, SeaNanners and WoodysGamerTag, which had inspired him to make the YouTube channel "TheZanySidekick", his first foray into content creation.[citation needed]

Ahgren moved to Arizona for college, where he joined the comedy club "Tempe Late Night", and also discovered competitive Super Smash Bros. Melee. Having taken an interest in the game after watching The Smash Brothers and attending a tournament in New Hampshire, he went to local tournaments in Arizona and enjoyed participating in the esport and becoming involved in its community.[citation needed] He graduated cum laude from Arizona State University with a dual degree in English Literature & Journalism and Mass Communication in 2017.[11]

After graduating, Ahgren applied for jobs in New York and Los Angeles. After his lease was up in Arizona, Ahgren packed up and moved in a rented Toyota Camry for a job interview with Wine & Spirit magazine. He accepted the job offer in Los Angeles for a position as a web editor for the magazine, despite having no prior web development experience. He ended up getting fired from each of the five jobs he held in Los Angeles, including working as the marketing lead at a vape company (which eventually led to a collaboration with FaZe Clan COO FaZe Banks). After being fired the fifth and final time, he elected not to look for a new job and instead committed to streaming on Twitch full-time, something he had been doing part-time for several months but was not yet making a great amount doing.[12][13]

Competitive gaming career

As a Super Smash Bros. Melee competitor, Ahgren has seen limited but notable success. His most successful year came in 2017, where Ahgren won a set of games against each of two players ranked in the top 104 of Melee's community, Team Liquid's Chillindude[14] who was playing his tertiary Mario and Tempo Storm's Vro.[15] Ahgren also won a game against the then-12th ranked player in the world, Westballz,[16] later losing the set. Ahgren has achieved much more success as a Melee commentator, calling matches at many major Melee tournaments, including the GENESIS series.[17] In 2019, Chillindude defeated Ahgren in a rematch at Mainstage, a national tournament in Ontario, California.[18]

In 2018, Ahgren organized a $1000 winner-take-all invitational Melee netplay tournament titled the Ludwig Ahgren Championship Series, which was won by Counter Logic Gaming's SFAT.[19] On April 13, 2020, Ahgren announced a successor to the first Ludwig Ahgren Championship Series titled, Worldwide Ludwig Ahgren Championship Series.[20] It was renamed Ludwig Ahgren Championship Series 2 when Ahgren re-announced it on June 30, 2020. The tournament was held on July 25-26 and was won by Golden Guardians player Zain.[21]

In November 2020, after The Big House 10 tournament received a cease and desist from Nintendo over the tournament's usage of an emulator which enabled netplay and matchmaking for Melee,[22] Ahgren announced the Ludwig Ahgren Championship Series 3, an impromptu charity tournament.[23] LACS 3 took place on December 20-21, seeing Mang0 win 3-1 against iBDW in the grand finals, and raised over $261,668 for Gamers for Love.[24]

Streaming career

Ahgren began streaming live part-time on May 16, 2018.[25] On February 16, 2019, he dedicated himself to streaming full-time as a career.[26]

During 2018 and 2019, Ahgren's stream retained a relatively small audience, mostly streaming content based on Super Smash Bros. Melee, Mario Party 2, and Dark Souls gameplay.[27] His streams progressively increased in viewership, along with his subscriber count. His viewership started picking up more in July of 2019, and increased dramatically in October of 2019.[12]

On November 10, 2019, Ahgren set the world record for the button mashing minigame Domination from Mario Party 4, going faster than a tool-assisted speedrun bot designed to be the fastest possible, setting a score of 201, higher than the limit of 160 which was possible due to a mod which increased the limit of points scored.[28][29] Polygon reporter Owen S. Good compared Ahgren's expression after completing the feat to NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal's expression after his iconic alley-oop dunk in the 2000 Western Conference Finals, saying, "If aliens landed and I had to explain what video games are and why they are fun, I'd show them this. Take a bow, Ludwig."[28]

In November 2019, Ahgren appeared in a Christmas-themed advertisement for Micro-Star International promoting the RTX 20 Series graphics card.[30] This was not the first advertisement that Ahgren had starred in, as he had previously portrayed himself in an advertisement for Hotels.com in 2018.[31]

In 2019, Ahgren launched the Mogul Moves line of clothing, which features sweatshirts and hoodies displaying the phrase "Mogul Moves" in varsity font. For the Melee tournament GENESIS 7, Ahgren successfully signed the future winner of the competition, Melee player Zain, who wore a Mogul Moves sweatshirt during the event.[32]

In January 2020, Ahgren, among other Melee competitors and personalities, such as Mew2King and Plup, competed in an invitational tournament for Pokémon Sword and Shield by 2016 Pokémon World Champion, Wolfe Glick, where Ahgren finished first.[33][34] Ahgren also won an invitational tournament organized by Americas Cardroom to crown the 'King of Twitch Poker', defeating Mang0 and Destiny in the process.[35]

In June 2020, Ahgren was invited to compete against other popular Twitch streamers in the amateur chess tournament PogChamps of Chess.com, placing second in the consolation bracket. Ahgren subsequently made an appearance on the cover of the August 2020 edition of Chess Life.[36]

On December 7, 2020, Ahgren released a Christmas-themed EP titled A Very Mogul Christmas.[37] In that same month, both Ahgren's YouTube channel and his Twitch channel reached over one million followers; Cale Michael of Dot Esports credited his rapid growth to his "Twitch stream expanding, continued collaboration with other big creators, and his willingness to try new forms of content out both live and for his YouTube channel."[38]

In January 2021, Ahgren began hosting a premier interactive game show on Twitch titled Hivemind with fellow streamer Cr1TiKaL.[39][40][41] The show invited guests from all around Twitch to participate.

On March 1, 2021, Ahgren announced that he was taking a leave of absence from streaming to visit family and friends in New Hampshire. On March 4, 2021, Ahgren underwent emergency surgery to get his appendix removed.[citation needed]

Ahgren appeared in the music video for Sub Urban and Bella Poarch's song, "Inferno", released on August 13, 2021.[citation needed]

In October 2021, Ahgren was amongst a multitude of streamers whose Twitch earnings were revealed in the midst of a data breach; the leak revealed that, between August 2019 and October 2021, Ahgren had earned $3.3 million through Twitch directly, a statement that Ahgren himself confirmed.[42]

On November 29, 2021, Ahgren announced that he will be leaving his current live streaming platform, Twitch, and will begin streaming on YouTube starting on November 30. He announced this with a short comedy sketch posted to his Twitter and YouTube pages that involved him blowing up a purple car which symbolized Twitch.[43][9][44]

Subathon

On March 14, 2021, Ahgren began a "subathon" stream, a near-continuous stream of his life with a running clock dictating how much longer the stream would run, with every subscription to his Twitch channel adding ten seconds to the timer.[45] The stream continued even as he slept, while his moderators provided entertainment. Ahgren placed a maximum cap of 31 days on the length of the stream (which he later reduced to 30 days), and despite Ahgren expecting the timer to run out after a day or two at most, the stream ran for 30 days, 7 hours, and 36 minutes, ending on April 13 at 9:00 PM PDT.[45][46] Starting off the stream with around 30,000 subscribers on his Twitch channel, Ahgren ended the stream with 283,061 subscribers, giving him the highest all-time concurrent subscriber count on the site,[47] beating Ninja's previous record of 269,154 in 2018.[48]

Ahgren stated that, for the final day of the stream, he would donate five dollars per subscription to Humane Society of the United States and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.[49]

Podcast

On June 29, 2021, Ahgren launched a podcast called The Yard with his three roommates.[50]

Personal life

Ahgren currently lives in Los Angeles, California, with Twitch streamer QTCinderella and three other roommates.[51]
