Metallica: Through the Never is an upcoming 2013 American IMAX concert/feature film featuring the American heavy metal band Metallica. The film shares its name with the song "Through the Never" from the band's 1991 self-titled album; the feature follows young Trip's (Dane DeHaan) surreal adventure during an urgent mission he is sent out on, sewn together with concert footage from a set of concerts Metallica held in August 2012.
Plot
As Metallica performs a roaring live set for fans in a sold-out arena, a young roadie named Trip is sent on a mission to meet a disabled truck and retrieve a particular item. However, the routine task turns into a surreal odyssey when Trip's van is hit by another vehicle and he subsequently finds himself up against a death-dealing horseman. As Trip flees through desolate streets, he has only his wits to help him avoid the deadly horseman and deliver Metallica's cargo.
Cast
- Dane DeHaan as Trip, a roadie and the silent protagonist
- James Hetfield as himself - lead vocals and rhythm guitar
- Lars Ulrich as himself - drums
- Kirk Hammett as himself - lead guitar and backing vocals
- Robert Trujillo as himself - bass and backing vocals

Release
The band made a surprise appearance in Detroit at the Orion Music + More Festival under the name Dehaan, after lead actor Dane DeHaan, to promote the film.[2]
Through the Never made its world premiere at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival.[3]
The film will be released in IMAX theaters across the United States on September 27, 2013,[4] the 27th anniversary of former Metallica bassist Cliff Burton's death, before being rolled out to normal cinemas in 3D the week after (October 4).
Reception
Peter Travers of Rolling Stone called the film "a full-throttle expression of rock & roll anarchy", and encouraged readers not to understand the plot, but to "live" it.[5]
Music
The official soundtrack for Through the Never will be released on September 24, 2013 via Blackened Recordings.[6]
