Minions: The Rise of Gru is a 2022 American computer-animated comedy film produced by Illumination and distributed by Universal Pictures. It is the sequel to the spin-off prequel Minions (2015) and the fifth entry overall in the Despicable Me franchise. Directed by Kyle Balda, with Brad Ableson and Jonathan del Val as co-directors, the film sees the return of Steve Carell as Gru, and Pierre Coffin as the Minions, along with Taraji P. Henson, Michelle Yeoh, RZA, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Lucy Lawless, Dolph Lundgren, Danny Trejo, Russell Brand, Julie Andrews, and Alan Arkin.

Minions: The Rise of Gru premiered at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 13, 2022, and is scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States on July 1, 2022, by Universal Pictures.

Premise

Set after the events of the first film in the 1970s, a 12-year-old Gru is growing up in the suburbs. A fanboy of a team of supervillains known as the Vicious 6, Gru hatches a plan to become evil enough to join them. When the Vicious 6 oust their leader, legendary fighter Wild Knuckles, Gru interviews to become their newest member.

It does not go well, and things only get worse after Gru steals a precious stone from them with the help of Kevin, Stuart, Bob, Otto, and the other Minions and suddenly finds himself the mortal enemy of the apex of evil. On the run, Gru and the Minions will turn to an unlikely source for guidance, Wild Knuckles himself, and discover that even bad guys need a little help from their friends.

Development

In January 2017, Universal Pictures and Illumination announced the sequel to their animated film, Minions.[8] The film began production in July 2017, with Brad Ableson added as a co-director.[9] In May 2019, the film's title was revealed as Minions: The Rise of Gru.[10]

Casting

In December 2019, it was announced that Pierre Coffin and Steve Carell would be reprising their roles as the Minions and Gru, respectively.[4]

Animation

Production of the film shifted to remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic, following the temporary closure of Illumination Mac Guff.[11]

Music

The soundtrack album for the film is set to be released on July 1, 2022, through Decca Records and Verve Label Group.[12] The Jack Antonoff-produced soundtrack consists of various contemporary artists covering famous funk, pop, and soul hits of the 1970s. "Turn Up the Sunshine" by Diana Ross and Tame Impala was released as the album's lead single on May 20, 2022.[13] It was followed by Kali Uchis's cover of "Desafinado" and St. Vincent's cover of "Funkytown".[14][15][16]

Theatrical

Minions: The Rise of Gru premiered on June 13, 2022, at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.[17] The film was originally scheduled for general release on July 3, 2020,[10] but due to the COVID-19 pandemic and their incomplete status with Illumination Mac Guff's temporary closure in response to that event, it was pushed back to July 2, 2021,[18][19] and later to July 1, 2022.[20]

Marketing

Toy company Mattel announced that it had entered a three-year deal to create merchandise based on the film.[21] Lego released two sets for the film in 2020.[22] A collaboration with the film was made within the Roblox game Adopt Me!.[citation needed]

Home media

Minions: The Rise of Gru is scheduled to stream on NBCUniversal's Peacock streaming service within four months of its theatrical release, as part of an 18-month deal. The film would then move to Netflix for 10 months, before returning to Peacock for the last four months.[23]

Reception

Box office projections

In the United States, Minions: The Rise of Gru is projected to gross $65–80 million in its opening weekend.[24]

Critical response

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 67% of nine critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 5.9/10.[25]
