Mommy is a 2014 Canadian drama film directed by Xavier Dolan. It was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or in the main competition section at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, [2] where it won the Jury Prize.[3]
Plot
The film stars Anne Dorval as Diane Després, a widowed mother who is overwhelmed by the difficulty of raising her troubled, sometimes violent son Steve (Antoine Olivier Pilon) as a single parent. Després then begins to receive assistance and support from her mysterious new neighbour Kyla (Suzanne Clément).[4]

Reception
On 21 May 2014, Mommy received a four-star rating from Guardian reviewer Peter Bradshaw, who described the film as "a splashy, transgressive treat, from trailer-trash chat to unexpected sex and surprising emotional depth".[5] Following Dolan's receipt of the Jury Prize at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, Guardian writer Xan Brooks introduced the film as "a boisterous Oedipal comedy".[6]
On the Rotten Tomatoes website, the film received a 100% "fresh" rating, based on 10 reviews—with an average score of 8.8/10—on 1 June 2014.[7] On Metacritic, the film holds an average score of 81, based on 9 critics, indicating "Universal acclaim" in accordance with the website's standards.[8]
