Plot

The film stars Anne Dorval as Diane Després, a widowed mother who is overwhelmed by the difficulty of raising her troubled, sometimes violent son Steve (Antoine Olivier Pilon) as a single parent. On 21 May 2014, Mommy received a four-star rating from Guardian reviewer Peter Bradshaw, who described the film as "a splashy, transgressive treat, from trailer-trash chat to unexpected sex and surprising emotional depth".[5] Following Dolan's receipt of the Jury Prize at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, Guardian writer Xan Brooks introduced the film as "a boisterous Oedipal comedy".[6]

On the Rotten Tomatoes website, the film received a 100% "fresh" rating, based on 10 reviews—with an average score of 8.8/10—on 1 June 2014.[7] On Metacritic, the film holds an average score of 81, based on 9 critics, indicating "Universal acclaim" in accordance with the website's standards.[8]
