Mount Alvernia High School is a private high school with grades 7-12, an all-girls Roman Catholic high school in Newton, Massachusetts located in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston.

Background

Mount Alvernia High School was established in 1935 as an extension of Mount Alvernia Academy, an elementary school established in 1927 located in nearby Chestnut Hill. In 1972 Mount Alvernia High School became a separate entity when it moved to 790 Centre St. in Newton, Massachusetts. Mount Alvernia is a college-preparatory high school. Every student that attends graduates with at least one college acceptance.[2]

Mount Alvernia school has approximately 240 students, and its campus covers around 23 acres. The average class size is 12 students, with an overall teacher-to-student ratio of 1 to 9. There are numerous varsity sports teams, including cross country, soccer, swimming, volleyball, basketball, ice hockey, indoor track and field, golf, outdoor track and field, softball, and tennis.[3][4]

Senior Symposium

The Senior Symposium is the capstone project that all students complete during their senior year at Mount Alvernia High School. The Symposium is a long-term project that requires each student to draw on the skills she has developed at Mount Alvernia and the end product is a thesis of the students education at MAHS. The project consists of a research paper for history, an analytical paper for English, research logs, and a formal oral presentation. The oral presentation takes places on a night in May during Senior Week with parents, faculty and students in the audience. The Senior Symposium papers completed by students are bound and become part of the permanent collection in the school library.[1][2] [5]
