Music to Be Murdered By is the eleventh studio album by American rapper Eminem, released on January 17, 2020 by Aftermath Entertainment, Interscope Records and Shady Records with no prior announcement, in similar fashion to his previous album Kamikaze (2018).[3] The album was produced by Eminem and Dr. Dre, amongst other producers, and features collaborations with Black Thought, Q-Tip, Juice Wrld, Ed Sheeran, Young M.A, Skylar Grey, Don Toliver, Anderson .Paak, Royce da 5'9", King Crooked and Joell Ortiz among others.[4]
Alongside the album, Eminem also released a music video for "Darkness",[5] directed by James Larese.[6]
Artwork and title
The album was released with two different cover designs; one featuring Eminem wearing a trilby hat and holding a shovel, and the other featuring Eminem, hatless, holding an ax and a gun to his head. Both versions credit Eminem under his "reincarnated" alter-ego name Slim Shady.
The album's title and cover art allude to the 1958 Jeff Alexander album, Alfred Hitchcock Presents Music to Be Murdered By. Eminem tweeted an image of the album cover featuring Alfred Hitchcock holding an ax and a gun to his head stating the album cover was "inspired by the master, Uncle Alfred!"[7][6]

Music to Be Murdered By received generally positive reviews from music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 65, based on 13 reviews, [9] being better received than his previous two albums, Revival and Kamikaze [21].
Writing for The Guardian, Alexis Petridis regarded Music to Be Murdered By as a "stronger" album than Kamikaze, whilst praising Eminem's delivery as "warp-speed and perfectly enunciated" with "constant shifts in tempo and emphasis".[16] Neil McCormick of The Daily Telegraph gave the album five-stars, and described it as "so lethally brilliant [that] it should be a crime".[13]
The song, "Darkness", about the 2017 Las Vegas shooting and told from the point of view of the shooter alternating with Eminem's own, has garnered particular attention and acclaim.[22]
