Robert Largan (born 29 May 1987) is a British Conservative Party politician, who was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for High Peak at the 2019 general election.[1]

Early life

Largan was born in Manchester as the son of Terry and Joanna Louise Largan. He was educated at Philips High School and the University of Manchester.[2][3] As a student, he worked on the fish counter at Asda.[3]

Career

After university, Largan moved to London and trained to become a chartered accountant. He worked as an Equity Capital Markets Manager for Deloitte from 2012 to 2017. In 2014, he was elected as a Conservative councillor for Sands End (based around the area of the same name) in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. He stood down from the council in 2017.[4] He was a Policy Advisor at the Department for International Trade from 2017 to 2018, and a Finance Manager at Marks and Spencer from 2018 to 2019. Largan has also worked as a parliamentary assistant to the Conservative MP for Chelsea and Fulham, Greg Hands.[3]

Before being elected as the Member of Parliament for High Peak, Largan unsuccessfully contested the Bury South constituency for the Conservatives at the June 2017 general election. Largan then applied to be the Conservative Parliamentary candidate for Crewe and Nantwich in September 2018, before he was selected for High Peak the following month.[5] He was elected as the MP for High Peak at the 2019 general election.[6] This was a key marginal seat that had been taken by Labour at the previous general election.

In October 2020, Largan voted against the extension of the Free School Meals voucher scheme, stating that the scheme was intended to be a temporary measure specifically to provide relief during UK lockdowns for the COVID-19 pandemic, rather than a more permanent scheme.[7] In November 2020, he founded the all-party parliamentary group for the Peak District and was elected chair, noting a focus on bringing green jobs to the region.[8]

In his first year in Parliament, he was present for almost all votes and voted with his party 98% of the time.[9] Among his rebel votes against his party were two votes against the Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) bill.[10] For the 2019–2020 period, Largan claimed the most in expenses (£25,666.71) among MPs in Derbyshire,[11] though this amount was comparatively low amongst Conservative MPs.[12]

Personal life

Largan's partner is Beth Allcock. He lives in Glossop, and he lists his recreations as "fell walking, cooking, reading, supporting Manchester United, spending time in the pubs of High Peak".[1]
