Romanian record charts
The Romanian Top 100 (also known as Romanian Singles Chart, Romanian Airplay Chart and Romanian Singles Airplay Chart) was the national singles chart of Romania until 2012. Founded in 1996, it was a ranking based on the compilation of charts submitted by local Romanian radio stations. The Romanian Top 100 was published weekly and was also announced during a radio show starting in 1998. Compilance was first handled by Body M Production A-V, followed by Nielsen and Media Forest. In the 2010s, the chart was announced during a podcast on Kiss FM, but the broadcast ended in February 2012. It was since then replaced with the Airplay 100. Along with various other records, Australian singer Kylie Minogue, Spanish singer Enrique Iglesias and American singer Madonna have been credited as the most successful artists in the Romanian Top 100 chart history, with each having six number one singles.
History and compilation
The Romanian Top 100 was founded in 1996,[4] with the first year-end chart published in 1997.[5] Beginning with 1998, the chart was announced during a two-hour radio show called Romanian Top 100 Radio Show hosted by disc jockey Adi Simion and created by VentoStudio. Aired by 57 radio stations in Romania, it was originally titled Romanian Top 100 Bravo Show due to a partnership with Bravo.[6] Starting with 1999, the Romanian Top 100 was compiled by Body M Production A-V with the help of a "special software". At that time, over 110 independent radio stations in Romania were considered when compiling the chart, with each submitting their own airplay statistics.[7] The compiling process was similar to the Eurochart Hot 100. The results were sent to music specialists in Romania, among others.[4]
As of April 2001, the Romanian Top 100 had reached over 250 editions.[7] In 2005, the number of radio stations involved in the making of the chart rose to 120, with over 450 editions.[8] At one point, the Romanian Top 100 was published in Billboard's Music & Media magazine, but the inclusion was soon dismissed due to the magazine's cancellation.[4] In the 2010s, the chart — compiled by Nielsen and Media Forest — was announced during a weekly podcast on Kiss FM by disc jockey Andreea Berghea.[2][3] In an April 2009 article, Romanian website Music Chat criticized the compilation of the chart and questioned its credibility, noting a problem in distinguishing heavy rotation from short teasers, resulting in extra counts.[3] It ceased its publication in February 2012, with its last edition on 19 February 2012.[9] It was later replaced with the Airplay 100, also compiled by Media Forest and aired as a podcast on Kiss FM hosted by Cristi Nitzu.[10]
Achievements and milestones
This is a comprehensive listing that highlights significant achievements and milestones based upon the Romanian Top 100. During two decades, several records and milestones were set up by artists, including "I Follow Rivers" (2011) by Swedish singer Lykke Li having the longes spell atop the chart, and Australian recording artist Kylie Minogue having the most number ones on the Romanian Top 100 in a tie with Spanish singer Enrique Iglesias and American entertainer Madonna.
