Simply Deep is the debut solo album by American singer Kelly Rowland, first released by Columbia Records on October 28, 2002 in North America, and by February 3, 2003 throughout most international territories. Recorded within the three weeks during the hiatus of former group Destiny's Child and upon the success of worldwide number-one hit single "Dilemma," a collaboration with rapper Nelly, the album facilitated Rowland in becoming a viable solo star.

Simply Deep peaked at number twelve on the Billboard 200 in the U.S., where it was certified gold by the RIAA for more than 600,000 copies sold.[1] The album also topped the UK Albums Chart and became a gold-seller in Ireland, Hong Kong, Singapore, New Zealand, Australia, Canada and other countries, resulting into a worldwide sales total of 4 million copies.[2][3]

Background

Rapper Nelly went into the studio to record the track Dilemma for his second studio album, Nellyville, and wanted a female vocalist to add. The song samples Patti LaBelle's "Love, Need and Want You" from her 1983 album I'm In Love Again. Nelly called Rowland by phone and they both agreed. After a few days of recording, during which Rowland rerecorded her part many times to achieve it "just right", "Dilemma" was completed. By July 2002, the track had reached the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100 based on airplay alone. The song affected the early plans for Destiny's Child members, whose members were held on hiatus to pursue solo album releases. As part of their strategy, each member's albums were to be staggered with member Beyoncé Knowles releasing in October 2002 and Rowland's album expected in early 2003. Their management rescheduled the dates: Rowland eventually released her debut solo album, Simply Deep, on October 28, 2002, ahead of the other two members of the group. "Dilemma" was released as the first single off the album, which served as a propeller for her solo career. "Dilemma" is Rowland's first international solo single away from the group. The song was received well by the critics.

Reception

Allmusic reviewer Jason Birchmeier noted it as one of the "three well-calculated, standout" tracks in the album. In her review for Simply Deep, Caroline Sullivan of The Guardian wrote: "Thanks to the ubiquitous Dilemma, a song that practically peeled off its clothes on the spot, Destiny's Child's Kelly Rowland is no longer a mere backing vocalist for Beyoncé Knowles." Dilemma was nominated for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration, Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group and Record of the Year at the Grammy Awards of 2003.The song won. Best Rap/Sung Collaboration.

Releases and promotion

Simply Deep was released through Columbia Records in collaboration with Music World Music on October 28, 2002 in both the United States and Canada. The album would not be released worldwide until February 3, 2003.

Originally expected in early 2003, the success of the collaboration caused the label to advance the release date of her debut solo album, Simply Deep, which Rowland rushed within three weeks to get done.[3][4] Featuring production by Mark J. Feist, Robert "Big Bert" Smith, Rich Harrison, and singers Brandy and Solange Knowles, the album took Rowland's solo work further into an alternative music mixture, which Rowland described as a "weired fusion [of] a little bit of Sade and a little bit of rock."[4][5]

The album yielded three singles. "Stole," a rock pop-influenced mid-tempo track about loss, was released as the album's lead single, following the worldwide success of "Dilemma"."Stole" entered the top twenty on the majority of the charts it appeared on, reaching the top five in Australia, Ireland, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, where it remains her highest-charting solo single to date. [6][7] The album's second single was an up-tempo track entitled "Can't Nobody".[8] The final single, "Train on a Track", was featured on the soundtrack of the romantic comedy film Maid in Manhattan (2003).[9]

In late-2003, nearly a year after Simply Deep's initial release, Rowland embarked on a European tour, the Simply Deeper Tour, to promote the album. Visiting seventeen venues, Rowland embarked on the tour in the United Kingdom on September 13, 2003 and concluded it on October 6, 2003 in Paris, France.

Released stateside in October 2002 and internationally in 2003, Simply Deep peaked at number twelve on the Billboard 200 in the U.S., where it was eventually certified gold by the RIAA for more than 600,000 copies sold.[1] Released to even bigger success in international terrotories, the album topped the UK Albums Chart and became a gold-seller in Ireland, Hong Kong, Singapore, New Zealand, Australia, Canada and other countries, resulting into a worldwide sales total of 2.5 million copies.[2][3]
