Super Mario Bros. Wonder[a] is an upcoming platform game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. It is the first traditional side-scrolling Super Mario game since New Super Mario Bros. U (2012) and is scheduled to be released on October 20, 2023.
Gameplay
Super Mario Bros. Wonder is a side-scrolling platform game. As one of eight player characters—Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Princess Daisy, Toad, Toadette, Nabbit and Yoshi—the player completes levels across the Flower Kingdom with assistance from its talking flower-like denizens.[2][3] Similar to prior Super Mario games, players guide their character to the end of a level while avoiding enemies (such as Goombas and Piranha Plants) and transporting through Warp Pipes. Each stage contains multiple collectible "Wonder Seeds".[4] The game supports local multiplayer for up to four players.[5]
New power-ups include a fruit that transforms the player into an elephant,[4][6] a flower that allows the player to create bubbles that capture enemies,[3] a mushroom that gives the player a drill hat,[3] and the Wonder Flower, which triggers bizarre effects such as pipes coming to life, hordes of enemies spawning, and character appearances and abilities altering.[4][6]
A new feature sees players equip badges, which give players different perks, unlocked throughout the game.[3] They are divided in three different types: Action Badges that grant an additional ability to the player character, Boost Badges which give the player character an additional passive ability, and Expert Badges which grant an advanced skill to the player character.[6]
Some online multiplayer functionality is also supported.[3]
Development and release
Takashi Tezuka, who has been the main producer of the Super Mario 2D series of games since New Super Mario Bros. and previously directed Super Mario World and Super Mario Bros. 3, returned as producer. Shiro Mouri, who previously directed New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, served as director.
The team stated that during development, they were not given a deadline to produce a prototype, which resulted in a longer development time than previous entries.[7] During the initial planning of Super Mario Bros. Wonder, director Shiro Mouri desired to recreate the sense of "secrets and mystery" that had been present in the original Super Mario Bros. for a modern audience. Focus was placed on updating the traditional idea of transporting Mario to different areas of the level using warp pipes, vines, or other means. Mario series producer Takashi Tezuka suggested to instead change up the current physical location, and the Wonder Flower, which dramatically alters the current level, was born. In order for all levels in the game to uniquely implement this item, up to 2000 ideas for Wonder effects were solicited from the development team. The most viable were prototyped, iterated upon, and implemented in the final game.[8]
Super Mario Bros. Wonder was announced during a Nintendo Direct presentation on June 21, 2023. It is scheduled to be released on October 20, 2023 for the Nintendo Switch.[9] It is the first traditional 2D side-scrolling Super Mario game since New Super Mario Bros. U (2012).[5] On August 21, 2023, it was announced that Charles Martinet, who had voiced Mario and other characters since the 1990s, would no longer be voicing any characters. As such, Super Mario Bros. Wonder will be the first time Martinet will not be involved in the mainline Super Mario series.[10][11]
On August 31, 2023, a special 15-minute Nintendo Direct was held as a preview of the upcoming game.[12]
