Why 5' 3" in Ireland[edit]

  • 4' 8.5" was one of the existing gauge.
  • 4' 8.5" equipment was available off the shelf.
  • 4' 8.5" equipment could be bought and sold with other systems on the continent.
  • 4' 8.5" might have encourage exports to a wider market.
  • Are there any "Irish Alps" that might require very power locomotives that need more space between the wheels for bigger cylinders? Tabletop (talk) 13:25, 8 May 2013 (UTC)
