Extending?[edit]

I agree! It's just that he doesn't have as many credits as LaChiusa, or a website like JRB, so information is hard to find... there are plenty of interviews, though. Perhaps someone can glean a decent biography from them?ChrisLK 01:59, 9 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Weight[edit]

Really? A request from his grandfather from a room away for him to "play (one piece) louder"? I think that's too minor for inclusion and borders on trivia, regardless of how successful Grampa was in the same industry. It is an oft-repeated anecdote about Guettel; having his own self-depreciating take on the story adds to the article. In general, the article could stand to have content added rather than detail removed -- Foetusized (talk) 01:12, 24 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree. It's being given undue weight and not worthy of inclusion. It's not encyclopedic, it's trivial, despite how "oft-repeated" the tale is told. An elderly grandpa wants to hear his grandson play louder? Sounds like spin, regardless of the careers of the characters. Perhaps if you could show more than one reference where the anecdote was repeated, it might be slightly worthy. If the article could use bulking up, the way to do it is not with garbage. The equivalent would be like including the entire plotline of the Will & Grace episode where Kevin Bacon guest stars in the Kevin Bacon article. 207.237.33.36 (talk) 05:01, 24 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm really not quite sure what you mean by "weight" but it doesn't seem to be concept covered at WP:WEIGHT. What strikes you as "spin" and "garbage" isn't universal for everyone else, and your "equivalent" example clearly is not. A better example would be the anecdote about George Washington cutting down a cherry tree, an anecdote which has the further strike against it that it isn't true, but is still mentioned in the George Washington article because it is notable, even if "unweighty."

Sorry, but I don't accept your premise that the two sentences under discussion are trivial and/or unnecessary detail. Pardon this intrusion by a random passerby. I have no knowledge of Adam Guettel, other than this article and a cursory reading of some cited sources. Based on what I've read, it seems to me that the effect of his famous grandfather on his life, career, and psyche is a topic that must be covered in the article. The anecdote about playing the piano for his grandfather is very relevant to covering that topic. The placement of the sentences (between a perfunctory statement about his work as a boy soprano and another perfunctory statement about his high school) seems awkward, though. Maybe this part of the article can be rearranged in a less rigidly chronological fashion. My 2 cents... --Orlady (talk) 02:38, 25 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
If that was the intent (to show the influence his Grandfather had on his career), I would suggest this anecdote -one in which the subject himself downplays- would hardly reflect that. Perhaps a new section about his family, expanding on the single sentence in the lead paragraph. After looking at source material the last few days, there's plenty out there about the impact of his grandfather and mother (who also wrote Broadway musicals) on his career in music. I've already worked on the Early Life section, with content about his transition from boy soprano to composing, without using the contested anecdote. I still reserve the right to add the anecdote and his quote about it to a family section, because I remain unconvinced that anyone other than our anon friend thinks it doesn't belong in the article -- Foetusized (talk) 13:04, 25 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
