Town?
[edit]The entry for "Uelen" also lists IT as the "easternmost settlement in Russia". Which is correct? (above posted 18:59, 13 May 2008 by 64.195.252.194)
- My read is that Russian usage distinguishes Town from Settlement. Thus Anadyr is the easternmost locality with town status. Uelen, a village, is the easternmost settlement of any kind.Dankarl (talk) 18:34, 15 July 2009 (UTC)
- Anadyr is most certainly a city, a provincial capital with multi-story buildings, industry and modern airport. And YES, Russian i.e. Soviet tradition distincts urban settlements by type clearly: Types of inhabited localities in Russia— Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.72.233.80 (talk • contribs)
- You seem to be confusing "town" with "urban-type settlement". Those are indeed two distinct categories. As for "town" vs. "city", those are synonyms, referring to what in Russian is known as "город". Anadyr is definitely not an urban-type settlement (and neither it is a "capital", by the way—only republics have those; Anadyr is the "administrative center"); and "town" is used because at ~13,000 inhabitants calling it a "city" sounds quite ridiculous (although technically not incorrect). As far as places in Russia go, Wikipedia traditionally only calls the localities with a population of over ~100,000 "cities". - IMHO, "town" = ПГТ, местечко, погост = urban-type settlement.--Юе Артеміс (talk) 10:46, 21 May 2018 (UTC)
- Definitely not for Russia.--Ymblanter (talk) 10:55, 21 May 2018 (UTC)
