Year of birth
[edit]While 1917/18 is supported by the digJamaica source, the Richmond Afro-American article states that he was 23 in 1947 which would put it at around 1924. --Michig (talk) 22:38, 3 November 2013 (UTC)
- True, but in my experience of similar examples the balance of probabilities is that the hospital and/or his family got it right at the time of his death, and that he (and/or his agent) claimed that he was younger than he actually was when establishing his career. But, if you want to tweak the references to his date of birth I won't object. Ghmyrtle (talk) 23:02, 3 November 2013 (UTC)
- 1917/18 is probably closer to the truth. I agree that the later source is more likely to be correct, but just thought it was worth noting. We may find a third source that disagrees with both. --Michig (talk) 21:13, 4 November 2013 (UTC)

LGBT?
[edit]This article had its genesis at the WP Entertainment Reference Desk almost exactly 10 years ago, on 3 November 2013: Wikipedia:Reference desk/Archives/Entertainment/2013 November 3#Whatever happened to Archie Lewis a black singer with Geraldo's Orchestra and the BBC too. The querent could find precious little about Lewis, but did say that he suffered because of his gayness at a time when that was not socially OK. At the time I queried where that info came from, because I could find no corroboration anywhere. The only reference to his private life that emerged in 2013 was the fact that he had married.
Now the article exists, thanks to User:Ghmyrtle. Later editors have added gay categories, but there's nothing in the article that would support this. If it's on the public record, we should state it explicitly in the text of the article, not just buried somewhere in one of our sources. If no such knowledge exists, we should remove the gay categories. Can someone clarify this? -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 21:22, 1 November 2023 (UTC)
- I don't have access to the DNB biography entry by Val Wilmer, which was added as a reference in this edit and I assume provided the basis for later edits. If anyone has access to the article it should be reviewed. Ghmyrtle (talk) 21:33, 1 November 2023 (UTC)
