during the voncuvouver riots, is there any chinese people were killed? with sources please. Jackzhp 20:24, 1 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nothing in Vancouver's local historiography indicates any deaths, but a UBC student recently found such claims in contemporary Taiwanese newspapers. I wouldn't take it as hard evidence that there were actually deaths, but it does raise the possibility. The standard story is that the rioters destroyed property in Chinatown, but physical confrontation didn't occur until they reached Japantown, where Japanese residents, who had advance warning of what was coming, fought back. A classic account of the riots is in White Canada Forever by Peter Ward. bobanny 20:48, 1 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I am afraid that Chinese people was/is just not able to defend themselves, and not able to take action to report and complain to the government. Jackzhp 20:29, 3 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
They did protest what happened with a strike following the riot. There was also a government inquiry into what happened where they voiced their concerns and demanded compensation for damages. I'm guessing you're not in Canada? Official discrimination ended after WWII, and today, although there's still racism, the Chinese are a large and powerful political constituency in Vancouver. There was recently a government apology and promise of redress for a head tax that was imposed on Chinese immigrants for decades and, as of next month, the city will have it's first Chinese police chief. bobanny 21:11, 3 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
