The article says he was born in Chili, spelled like the pepper, not the country. It also says he was an Italian American, I can't find any Chili in Italy. This link makes it seem likely that he was born in Viganj, Dalmatia, now Croatia, but identified as Italian. I can't find any other evidence for a birth location on the web, except for this which purports to have census data, but appears to misspell Chille. Somebody who actually knows something about this guy might want to do further research and make a correction.
