Is Augustus street in Hamilton named afer him? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.210.97.26 (talk) 17:58, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

  • The city of Hamilton press release says several streets in Hamilton & Stoney Creek are named in his honour, but it doesn't say which. So probably, but I can't be sure. Mr Lemon (talk) 20:40, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

Feedback re Childhood section

The section includes information up to age 26 or 27, so Childhood is not a good title.

"His sister, Mary Jones Gage moved with the family - her farmhouse would later be the scene of the Battle of Stoney Creek.[3]"

This makes it sound as if the Battle took place IN the farmhouse. Let's hope for the sake of Mary's good china that it didn't. Maybe her farm was the scene??

Ref 3 currently is about wall decoration. (Maybe the place was redecorated after the battle?? ;o) Wanderer57 (talk) 19:44, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

Err, there's a section in the book on the wall decorations of Mary Jones Gage's house, which was apparently the nicest estate in the area. The section includes some background information on the house. You might be able to see it http://books.google.ca/books?id=Pu3YVCaU_t4C&pg=PA231&dq=Mary+Gage+Jones&sig=hipp7LFFHF-Dt17xhWbyMiHCmhw . As for the rest of it, I'll retitle the section "Youth" for now, since it's essentially his "pre-employment" life, and yeah, the battle seems to have taken place in the fields around the house for the most part, but I suspect there was damage to the house, which had been occupied by American forces. Mr Lemon (talk) 19:52, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

Odd Spelling

I see the name Joseph Brandt. The normal spelling of the man's name is Joseph Brant. I do not know if there's a source for the other spelling, or is it a typo.

http://www.snowwowl.com/nativeleaders/josephbrandt.html This website has brandt in the title and brant in the body.  ??

Wanderer57 (talk) 20:07, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

You are correct. Brant is very strongly preferred. I don't know that I have ever seen the name as "Joseph Brandt", whereas (at a rough guess) somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2 of the towns and cities in southern Ontario have a "Brant Street".
I fixed some other places where it was Brandt. Best wishes, Wanderer57 (talk) 22:05, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
Not sure where I picked it up from. Thanks for the help! Mr Lemon (talk) 00:03, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

Survey

WP:Good article usage is a survey of the language and style of Wikipedia editors in articles being reviewed for Good article nomination. It will help make the experience of writing Good Articles as non-threatening and satisfying as possible if all the participating editors would take a moment to answer a few questions for us, in this section please. The survey will end on April 30.

  • Would you like any additional feedback on the writing style in this article?
  • Yes. In this case, the lack of information on the guy will probably prevent a push for FA status (I think almost everything know about him is in the article), but usually it'd be useful. WilyD 13:25, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
  • If you write a lot outside of Wikipedia, what kind of writing do you do?

  • Is your writing style influenced by any particular WikiProject or other group on Wikipedia?

At any point during this review, let us know if we recommend any edits, including markup, punctuation and language, that you feel don't fit with your writing style. Thanks for your time. - Dan Dank55 (talk)(mistakes) 03:50, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

Comments

  • Not a deal breaker, but some sections of the crown surveyor section are unreferenced. It's not exactly controversial information, but given the highly detailed nature of it, some folks may wish to see a source citation.
  • Hmm, seems to have been made unclear by copyediting - most of this comes from "Frey's survey of Niagara", but I've made this clearer. WilyD
  • The fifth paragraph of "Deputy surveyor" is very choppy, you might consider rewording a bit for better flow. Specifically the parts starting "A local chief..." until "York's garrison had 135 men." which were all short choppy sentences with little connections to the surrounding sentences.
  • I've tried to make the relevence of all this clearer ... not sure if I've succeeded, but a lot was going unsaid, yeah. WilyD
Looks a lot better. Ealdgyth - Talk 20:02, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
  • The first paragraphy of "Farmer, magistrate, .." is totally lacking in source citations, but gives opinions. It needs to be sourced.
  • Now attributed to the Dictionary of Canadian Biography WilyD
  • Same for the first sentence of the next paragraph, "prominent citizen" is very definitly opinion and should be cited.
  • Second paragraph of Farmer Magistrate... this sentence "These financial losses, coupled with prejudice towards him due to his Indian wife and children and his past polygamy from his white neighbors lead to the move." First, it should be "led" not "lead". Also, the sentence is unclear. The part "from his white neighbors" is awkward placed where it is, perhaps move it up to right after "prejudice"? Also, this is the first we've heard of polygamy, perhaps a bit of explanation is in order?
  • I agree about moving "from his neighbours" up, the flow is better. I'm unsure about explaining it there - I'll play with phrasings, but "short explanations" don't seem to fit. WilyD 18:15, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
Maybe just explain that earlier his marriage arrangements hadn't been totally regular? Ealdgyth - Talk 20:02, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
  • http://books.google.ca/books?id=Pu3YVCaU_t4C this book, while published by a university press and thus reliable, is about wall stenciling, and thus it's use to support a historical article is a bit ... odd. Not worth an oppose at GA, but if you take the article to FAC, expect to have its use questioned.
  • Hmm - I'll bear this in mind, but I'm unsure there's really enough material available on this guy to push towards FA. WilyD
Hey, if I can get Easy Jet to FA status, and it's on a horse... I think there is enough on this guy. Ealdgyth - Talk 20:02, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
  • This source http://www.burford.on.ca/founding.htm doesn't appear to support " In 1793, Lieutenant Governor John Graves Simcoe charged Jones with the surveying and construction of a new road from Lake Ontario to the Thames River. Simcoe employed the Queen's Rangers for the road's construction, from Hamilton to Woodstock. This road would become Dundas Street." which is the statement it's sourcing. Did a link get misplaced?
  • Page was changed. The same info probably appears in another source - I'll look. WilyD
  • Indeed, I found roughly the same information in a couple other spots - I left the changed page - looks like it may be under revamping at the moment? WilyD
  • Current ref 21 "James Keith Johnnson and Bruce G. Wilson "Historical essays on Upper Canada..." is this a journal article? If so, it's lacking the journal title. If it's a book, it's lacking a publisher.
  • Oops, cite template needs a "publisher" field, not a "Publisher" field - but this is resolved. It's a book. WilyD
  • Personal preference, but if you're going to use the short form of footnotes later (i.e. Smith, 44) it helps a bunch if you put the last name first in the earlier references, so that its easier to find.
  • The cite template now uses "first" and "last" fields, rather than an "author" field. WilyD

I've put the article on hold for seven days to allow folks to address the issues I've brought up. Feel free to contact me on my talk page, or here with any concerns, and let me know one of those places when the issues have been addressed. If I may suggest that you strike out, check mark, or otherwise mark the items I've detailed, that will make it possible for me to see what's been addressed, and you can keep track of what's been done and what still needs to be worked on. Ealdgyth - Talk 16:21, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

Looks like you addressed most of these. The one page that may be undergoing change is fine for GA status, just keep an eye on it. It would probably need to be ironclad for FAC, but I totally understand about sites changing their layouts on you. Luckily, he's not a living person, so we don't have those concerns. Anything else you think needs addressed before I pass it? Ealdgyth - Talk 20:02, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
Err, not that I'm aware of, but it's always hard to read your own text and see. The choices of redlinks might be a little off - I'm starting to think his son John is also notable enough to have an article, but Sarah Terikahogan might not be ... it's all very minor, howe'er. WilyD 20:34, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

Who is in the photograph under the name Augustus Jones?

I believe the first photographic portrait of a human was of Robert Cornelius in Philadelphia in 1839. Could this be a photograph of Augustus Jones Jr.? Or could it be a photo-realistic painting? That seems less likely, but if AJ Sr. died in 1836, the photo could not be of him. Any ideas? Johngreenhow (talk) 03:20, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
