About.com citations[edit]

Please do not revert About.com citations as "non-credible source" without further discussion. The reverted citation refers to an article written by a National Institute of Health Researcher on a website owned by the New York Times.(see acquisition) . There are over 5,000 about.com citations in Wikipedia articles. About.com has a Wikipedia article. 166.173.186.155 (talk) 20:35, 14 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, and thanks for talking. First, about.com may be owned by the NY Times but it is not the same as the NY times. The content I reverted represented that they are the same and the first edit note even said "New York Times recommendation" which is a huge misrepresentation. More importantly if you review WP:RSN you will see that generally about.com is looked at with askance. (see search results here and this post in particular. But bottom line, BPDFamily.com has not been recommended by the NY Times. Jytdog (talk) 20:53, 14 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
oh and the author is not a "NIH Researcher" but per her bio at about.com is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Eastern Connecticut State University. She seems to be an expert, for sure. We just shouldn't misrepresent her. Jytdog (talk) 20:58, 14 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The discussion you referenced had several statements to the affect that "there can be exceptions in the event that we want to cite the opinions of one of About's content-writers" so the citation is on solid footing. The author is a recognized expert in her field. " The citation said "New York Times' about.com", which is accurate. However, your point is still valid and can be accommodated by removing "New York Times" from the contribution. Constructive edits over reverts on good faith contributions are preferable. Thanks for the feedback/information.

Information in info box is dubious[edit]

Information in http://dbpedia.org/page/BPDFamily.com appears to be wrong. There is an unnamed Clinical advisor. John Cain is the Executive Director and R. Skip Johnson has an unnamed role. Also the source of the information is http://dbpedia.org/page/BPDFamily.com not https://www.dmoz.org/search?q=BPDFamily.--Penbat (talk) 11:02, 10 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

IP address editor 72.181.205.145 just reinstated the info box that User:Penbat deleted on April 10. The edit summary for the reinstatement refers to an unrelated edit and says no explanation was given for the removal. I assume this is an error on the IP editor's part, as the actual edit that removed the box does give an explanation in the edit summary, and refers to this talk. I assume if the reinstator knew this, he would have discussed the reinstatement here. So I am re-deleting it. Bryan Henderson (giraffedata) (talk) 20:49, 20 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
My error, I should have phrased my comment as "no substantiation". The info box is consistent with the two links above and the data contained within also aligns with the companies website, Alexa, Who is, etc. If there is a line item in the info box that is in doubt, then it should be questioned or corrected. Reverting good faith edits rather than upediting[edit]

@Jytdog:

I believe your revert was made in good faith but based on your edit note, I'm not confident that you looked carefully at the edits that were made.

1. The only content change was the following and it is referenced and it is more neutral:

OLD The origin of BPDFamily.com traces back to a single-title, online book discussion group which was created after the 1998 release of Stop Walking on Eggshells - one of the first books to help family members and romantic partners identify Borderline personality disorder traits in a loved one.

NEW The origin of BPDFamily.com traces back to the AOL online support groups that provided all the case studies used in the self-help book Stop Walking on Eggshells (1998). The AOL online support groups went on to become a single-title, online book discussion group for Stop Walking on Eggshells and in 2007, were spun off by the book's author to became an independent multi-national support group.[6][7]

2. Other neutrality edits included:

Changing medical establishment to medical providers (establishment is over reaching, specific medical providers are cited in the article)
Changing organization supports and members have participated to have been involved and referenced in (replace general with specific statement as the reference support this)

3. The rest was changing the order of paragraphs/sentences without content change.

4. The COI banner was removed as provided in WP:MTR referenced on the banner itself. If the maintenance template is not fully supported. Some neutrality tags, such as Conflict of Interest (COI) and Neutral point of view (POV), require the tagging editor to initiate a dialogue (generally on the article's talk page), to support the placement of the tag. If the tagging editor failed to do so, or the discussion is dormant, the template can be removed.

We should assume good faith. I spent an hour looking this article. I'll hold off reverting so that you may double check the above.

Thanks for posting here! Thanks too for the time you spent reviewing the article. I was thrown by the extensive changes and didn't realize it was mostly just re-arrangement and by changes early on. Here are the only two real issues
  • The change from the simple "was" to "is known for being" is promotional
  • Where exactly is there support for the claim that "that provided all the case studies used in the self-help book Stop Walking on Eggshells (1998)"? I didn't find that in the references provided.

The origin of BPDFamily.com traces back to an online AOL Usenet group from the early-1990s managed by Randi Kreger who went on to become co-author of the self-help book Stop Walking on Eggshells (1998) with Paul T. Mason, MS.[1][2] In 2007, the group was consigned to BPDFamily.com to be developed into an independent multi-national support group.[3]

From Randi Kreger: my name and website were in there previously, so it is not about that. My understanding is that Wikipedia wants facts to be accurate. The history section of this website was previously purposefully inaccurate. Previously, it said that BPD family came from AOL newsgroups, something that never existed. If you want to remove the whole history section, that is certainly fine with me. I merely objected to the false information. If you want to call false information a grievance, then I guess that is Wikipedia protocol. @RandiKreger: Correcting the AOL product name would have been best handled by making that specific correction and adding a supporting citation. The current citation says "AOL support group" so it is not clear what AOL service it was. Also, adding your name, book, and website and then making unexplained deletions was not constructive. That said, "influences" and what it "traces back to" is not important in my opinion and should be left out of the article. 99.61.82.180 (talk) 13:32, 22 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
