Renaming[edit]

I propose renaming this article to Londonderry Line I am aware of that the city is called Derry on wikipedia but according to NI railways the line is called the Londonderry Line, not the Belfast to Derry line NI railways Route mapC. 22468 (talk) 11:18, 25 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'd oppose this change as NIR regularly hop back and forth between names for the city. As seen here, were the timetable states Derry. Even the trains exterior electronic displays show both names. This one citation doesn't provide enough reason to contravene the naming dispute convention. --NorthernCounties (talk) 11:24, 25 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed, would it be better to re name it either Derry line or Londonderry line and open with "Derry Line or Londonderry Line runs from Belfast to Derry in Northern Ireland." it is what NI railways calls it C. 22468 (talk) 11:42, 25 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think renaming it would be the way to go as the current name states the route served and is least controversial (Or as least controversial as you can get on the whole Londonderry/Derry topic.) Perhaps you could see if there's consensus to have the opening paragraph state something along the lines of ("Belfast-Derry line" also known as "Derry/Londonderry Line") if you feel this needs to be better acknowledged. I'm in no doubt you'll see some more editors making their contributions/suggestions/opinions known. --NorthernCounties (talk) 11:54, 25 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The "/" doesn't mean you read it as "Slash". It means people call it "Londonderry Line" or "Derry Line" but stops unnecessary waffling. --NorthernCounties (talk) 14:51, 24 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Are we agreed that the line will remain the Belfast to Derry line but it will have a reference to what NI Railways call it? C. 22468 (talk) 12:16, 25 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I get this train regularly and I've never heard it being referred to as this. Fair enough the train on the front says Londonderry/Derry but inside the cabin, it is referred to simply as Londonderry. I thought it was the Belfast to Londonderry line? It arrives at Londonderry station and stops a number of times in County Londonderry.Homebirdni (talk) 12:23, 24 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
My edit has been undone by NorthernCounties. Are you actually telling me that when someone gets on the said train that they are traveling on the 'Londonderry slash Derry Line'?Local knowledge and common sense should prevail here.Homebirdni (talk) 14:32, 24 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If you take a look at this. Routemap taken from Translink website. Station is called Londonderry and the Line is called 'Londonderry Line' in the key.Homebirdni (talk) 15:38, 24 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

That is because NIR consider Derry's name Londonderry. If we were to name it what the operator calls it the page would have to be renamed Londonderry Line not Belfast - Londonderry Line but the wiki way of doing this is just to refer to both terminus cities of the line. This does not bypass the Derry naming convention. --NorthernCounties (talk) 15:44, 24 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The naming convention certainly appears to be city-city on Wikipedia. O Fenian (talk) 15:47, 24 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Do you have another example of a Railway Route Template in use in Northern Ireland? Im not too familiar with this. Thinking logically, NIR own the station and hence can call it what they want. Just the same as the Port is called Londonderry Port. The port serves the city aswell, just like the train station. And in the template the field is 'name' not 'cities served'.Homebirdni (talk) 15:57, 24 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I use the line regularly, and I would usually separate into the Coleraine Line (Belfast to Coleraine) and L'derry/Foyle Line (Coleraine to L'derry). Thought alternatively Translink could call it the Northern Line, as it serves the North and North-West of Northern Ireland — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.142.192.230 (talk) 01:34, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The city's name is Londonderry and so is the county's name. That's what should be used. Those who want to use "Derry" in order to avoid mentioning London and the city's historical connections with London, are those who want to change the name of the city because they are anti-British. An encyclopaedia should be using official names and not the names desired by separatists. 2A00:23C2:4B02:C01:E59A:10C3:4D38:4AD4 (talk) 23:00, 26 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Manual of style[edit]

WP:DERRY is clear, why is this being ignored? (That's obviously a rhetorical question by the way, since we all know why...) FDW777 (talk) 15:47, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
