"Belfast City" and "Belfast City Council"
[edit]I've made a couple of changes to the text to address the conflation of city and council. The current council boundaries are considerably different from those of the modern city (a comparison of BCC and Belfast parliamentary constituencies is particularly striking), with much of Belfast City actually lying outside Belfast City Council. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.242.203.232 (talk) 22:05, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
Motto
[edit]The text states that the motto ("Pro tanto quid...") is from Psalms 116:12 in the Vulgate. That appears doubly wrong. The citation is correct in the KJV, but in the Vulgate the correct citation is 115:3. Worse, "pro tanto quid..." doesn't seem to be in the Vulgate at all. The Vulgate text is "“Quid retribuam Domino pro omnibus quæ retribuit mihi?" So what is the real source of the motto? Windsorjw (talk) 17:14, 1 October 2016 (UTC)
Cleanup
[edit]I've added a cleanup tag to this as I don't have time myself at present -- but this could do with a lot of formatting tweaks; in particular the ordering and hierarchy of headings and use of capitalisation which goes against WP:MOS. Fattonyni (talk) 16:48, 6 March 2009 (UTC)
Belfast Corporation
[edit]I've read elsewhere (so far in references to the Ulster Hall) that the BCC used to be called the Belfast Corporation. could this be incorporated into this article somehow? Also at present Belfast Corporation redirects to Belfast, but I imagine it should redirect to this article, once some historical reference has been made to it here. Fattonyni (talk) 16:51, 6 March 2009 (UTC)
- I agree with both of your points. (It was Belfast Corporation from c. 1898 (I think) until 1973.) Mooretwin (talk) 17:00, 6 March 2009 (UTC)
Thanks :-) There seem to be references floating on the internet to the Corporation prior to 1898, I found a couple mentioning it in 1896... If you have (or anyone has) a tangible source with reference to the dates then I'd say go for it. I'm loathe to add the note to the article without confirming the dates... Fattonyni (talk) 14:06, 7 March 2009 (UTC)
Committee chairmen
[edit]"The posts of chairman and deputy chairman of committees are allocated on the basis of the d’Hondt system of proportionality" If that's the case (and all other posts seem more ceremonial than substantive) why no list of those chairmen?Bancki (talk) 19:05, 14 June 2013 (UTC)

Internally selected replacement councillor for Ormiston
[edit]The Green Party seat in Belfast City Council for the Ormiston DEA is currently listed on this page as vacant, however when the elected councillor Ross Brown stood down in November 2016, Georgina Milne was internally selected ("co-opted") by the party to replace him in this constituency as councillor. She officially started this role on 1st December 2016.
Can someone please advise as to how to accurately denote this; the tabled seats fall under the 2014 elections, so do I add Georgina Milne with inline reference to Ross Brown's standing down and her co-option, or is there a better place for this information.
I can't help but feel listing this seat as vacant requires a swift change, but I want to do it correctly.

Merge proposal: Members of Belfast City Council
[edit]Other council pages don't have a separate page for members. I was going along with it and just updated the Members page, but now realise it shares two tables with this page. To reduce the workload I'm suggesting copying all of it in here (three shared elements and two unique elements). Speak by 9pm UTC on Tuesday or forever hold your peace! (I hope that's reasonable ☺) sam💬 23:35, 19 November 2017 (UTC)
- (Slowing down - I see the 30 day recommendation.) I've now added all the "Members" page information to this one. Aldermen need updated though.
- Ok, it's on. sam💬 12:09, 6 January 2018 (UTC)

is Dunmurry in Belfast or is it a village?
[edit]I'm contemplating adding that BCC also serves Dunmurry, but I'm finding conflicting information on its status. Dunmurry was a village when it was apart of Lisburn City Council and as far as I'm aware there was no mention of this changing when it was transferred to BCC. However there is no countryside in between Dunmurry and Belfast like there is with Dunmurry and Lisburn. But then again letters addressed to Dunmurry list "Dunmurry" as the town, never "Belfast". But then sometimes its "Dunmurry, Belfast". Does anyone have a definite answer it's all very confusing. Nintentoad125 (talk) 20:07, 7 October 2022 (UTC)
Positions of responsibility
[edit]Found this document which describes how the "positions of responsibility" are chosen for the Belfast City Council as of 2014:
DRAFT GUIDANCE ON FILLING POSITIONS OF RESPONSIBILITY AND APPOINTING COUNCILLORS TO COMMITTEES
As with most things election-related in Northern Ireland, this sounds quite complicated. But it does clear up for me that they don't use election, or rather an election by the council for these positions, but rather these are appointed using the actual results for the immediate preceding election of the council using the D'Hondt method. If anyone thinks that they have a good way to add a bit about this process to the "Offices" section of the article, that would be great. Maybe even just kind of rewording what I described above would be helpful so that people get some kind of idea of how the mayor is chosen. --Criticalthinker (talk) 05:36, 13 March 2024 (UTC)
