Beer tax[edit]

I've removed the following text from the article. The main problems are: (1) it's a lot of weight (perhaps undue weight) to put on a single bill, in such a short article. (2) There's a lot of detail in the text, but no citations to reliable sources. (3) The text doesn't appear to be entirely neutral (though I've seen worse). Cannon was the main sponsor for House Bill 2461 a controversial bill that called for a 1900% increase in the Oregon Beer Tax which would have made it the highest increase on brewers in American History. It received national attention and was even documented in the Wall Street Journal due to the enormity of the proposed hike. The bill had come under fire from supporters of an industry that in Oregon provides 5200 direct jobs and an estimated 10,000 indirect jobs. The legislation couldn't get out of committee by the end of the June 2009 session. During that year Oregon floated between being the second and third highest ranked state in the nation in the unemployment rate. This came during a period in which the entire United States and even the world were suffering one of the worst economic climates since the Great Depression.

I am putting the text back in again (Forgive me for being unfamilair with the talk option here it's new to me). There are citations for the above mentioned in articles in the bill itself, Wall Street Journal, and the Corvallis Gazette Times which are linked below in this page. Crazytrain -- sorry to take so long to respond. Appreciate your response. I disagree -- as I think there are many more substantial things in Cannon's career that are not covered at all -- however, I'm not inclined to get into a lengthy discussion about it now, and am happy to let it stay for the time being.

I removed, "During that year Oregon floated between being the second and third highest ranked state in the nation in the unemployment rate. This came during a period in which the entire United States and even the world were suffering one of the worst economic climates since the Great Depression." It has nothing to do with the legislation, and seems to be a bit of a POV push. I also changed the word "couldn't" to "did not." I feel that the action of passing a bill through committee isn't something that cannot be done, it is some thing that is not done. --Brian Halvorsen (talk) 02:12, 25 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
