Birthdate changed from 1894 to 1893

[edit]

Although most reference works give Moten's birth year as 1894, that date seems to be based on an error that entered the literature a couple of decades after his death, starting with an influential essay by producer, record collector, and jazz historian Frank Driggs (cited in the new footnote that I have added), and repeated over and over in later publications. In contrast, contemporary obituary notices (also cited in the footnote) give his birthday as 13 November 1893, and his age at the time of his death as 41 (which is correct if he was born in 1893, but not if he was born in 1894). According to Marc Rice, who has done a lot of research on Moten and on early Kansas City jazz and its social and economic roots in the local African-American community, Driggs confirmed to him in 1996 that the 1894 date was an error (again, source cited in the new footnote). This all seems to me to be enough to correct the record and restore 1893 as Moten's year of birth, although I'm happy to discuss it if others disagree. I realize that the footnote that I have added is unusually long and dense, but I thought it best to be explicit, since almost every other online source gives the date as 1894, and some readers are bound to wonder at the discrepancy.
